From the manufacturer
What puts the sweet in Swerve?
The secret to Swerve’s zero-calorie sweetness is a combination of erythritol and oligosaccharides.
If you’ve ever visited a brewery, you’ve gotten a peek into how fermentation works. Erythritol is made by fermenting glucose with Moniliella pollinis, a natural microorganism. It also naturally occurs in many fruits and vegetables like melons, grapes and asparagus. Erythritol is classified by the FDA as a zero-calorie, 4-carbon sugar alcohol that does not affect blood glucose.
Oligosaccharides are sweet, non-digestible carbohydrates sourced from select fruits and starchy root vegetables. Oligosaccharides are prebiotic fibers, so they’re not only tasty, but they can help stimulate beneficial bacteria in your gut.

In fact is side by side comparison I realized I actually like the taste of Xylitol in my coffee better than real sugar now. That said, Swerve (Erythritol) checks a few more boxes for me, the easy to digest, tooth friendly, diabetic friendly, non-GMO, plus from what I read it actually has less calories than Xylitol, and is also pet friendly (unconfirmed) whereas Xylitol is deadly to your pets. I am going to try this out for a few weeks and see if it sticks, but as of right now as I sip my morning coffee with a near teaspoon of this dense powder mixed in, I honestly cannot even taste any sweetness, so I am doubtful. I am however going to try and wrap my brain around the fact that this is just better for me.
Update: Downgrade from three to two stars. I may have gotten my header wrong, this may be a sugar replacement, but it is definitely not a sweetener replacement. I feel like you have to use way too much of this product to get a noticeable sweetness from it, and it's kind of a sickly sharp almost chemical kind of flavor to me... I don't like it at all. Plus it's way too expensive to be this disappointed in a product, so I am definitely switching back to Xylitol.
- Swerve uses a flour like ingredient that sticks to/grates on throat towards the last sips of coffee, where I use this product.
- Sweetness quotient is lower than "Sugarlike", so you tend to use more.
- Both Sugarlike and Swerve are Erythritol based but Sugarlike tastes better by miles.
