Between 1927 and 1929, Burke worked for the "Dial "as a music critic. After a brief stint with "The Nation "(1934-36), he turned to literary criticism and taught at Bennington College from 1943 to 1961. Fascinating theories, but really really wordy, which sometimes obfuscates the intended meaning of whatever chapter's POINT. I sometimes have to read most of the chapter before I begin to understand what text is actually explaining a new point & which text is very interesting, but superfluous to the concept he's explaining. This guy was a genius, & his mind must have moved so fast, it's a miracle it ever got into book form without a computer!
