For any Get Smart fans out there this product is hard to believe.
I was upstairs and my router was downstairs.
I was not able to string 3 50' cables to each of my computers.
Well I could but my wife wouldn't let me :)
This gives you hard cable speed with only one cable coming up from the basement
So now I have 4 units...PS3, Windows, Linux and a storage box all hard wired.
Sweet!

This is a switch, so allows you to "split" a single network connection to seven devices (one of the eight ports is where you connect it to your router/modem). It's "unmanaged", which means it doesn't have fancy configuration settings, however managed switches are only needed in large installations and are much more expensive; for home or small office, unmanaged switches are fine. It's "gigabit" which means it can use the fastest cables/standard available, which is (in theory) 1000 mbps; you may see cheaper switches, but these are likely "fast ethernet", which gives you only up to 100 mbps.

All the 8 port, unmanaged, gigabit switches are pretty much the same in performance from all the mainstream manufacturers (Trendnet, D-Link, TP-link, Netgear, etc.). The main choices are between metal and plastic case. The internals are the same, just the material of the case is different. Some people like the solid feeling of a metal case and (in theory), it will be slightly better at dissipating heat and preventing interference. However, I've read tests that the differences are insignificant in the real world, even in server rooms with lots of wiring and electronics. IT people also tend to like metal cases because they can handle more abuse (being dropped, tossed into a big bin, screwed or attached to a metal rack, etc.). All of this is minor and irrelevant for home/small office users.

I just got this switch because it was the cheapest 8 port switch by a few dollars, plus it has a three year warranty (versus two year warranty from some of the others). I ran tests against a five port D-link switch that I'm replacing because I need more ports and the results are virtually identical; this will be no faster nor slower than other gigabit switches.

We have so many devices that need ethernet, it was time to get a switch. For those who don't really understand the purpose of a switch, it is essentially (and quite literally) a hub for ethernet. IE, if you have a router, there are likely 4 ethernet ports on the back of it, excluding the input.

Say you have VOIP, a NAS box, and two ethernet cables running throughout your house. That would come up to 4 ethernet connections. If you need MORE, you need a switch.

Its also very intelligent to use switches for organizational purposes. Even if you don't NEED one (you have spare room in the router's ports), it would be a good idea to run a single cable from your router to your entertainment center, and hook all your connected devices up to the switch at the end location. That way, you can have your devices hooked up, and organized, without the need to run several cables throughout the house going to the same place. You could even get a wireless booster, and boost the signal effectively throughout your house.

The quality of the switch is very important. These days, you want one capable of transferring gigabit at LEAST. This unit has gigabit, so that's good. I went with the 5 port model, as I only needed 2 more ports, but I'm glad knowing we've got a few more if needed. (Which we will - soon).

Definitely a recommended product of mine - great value.

I use this switch with Powerline adapters and have no problems. Have plugged in the TV, game console, web camera and they all work great.

This item works great.
Got it for a great price on sale and have never had an issue with it.

*Setup*
Super easy just plugged it in and plugged in the network cables to my machines and everything worked right away.

*Usage*
Have not had to touch it since it was first plugged in except to add more devices. Everything has been 100% consistent.

All said and done I wish I bought 2 of them. Great product and easy to use.

A very good product. With my bell router I was having four ports only and I needed 5. So I bought this for 8 ports for future expansion. To my utter surprise earlier i was getting 31ms ping time on speed test which gets reduced to 17ms. I am very happy with its performance. You need to stick it to the base on desktop or put some weight on it to keep it in place because of gravitational pull of cords at rear.

This little switch is the little switch that could. No dead ports. It's given me no trouble on my little home network. I've seen zero slowdowns or issues after connecting this to my cable modem/router and after a few months it's just hummed away happily through hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes of data every single month. Will buy another when I can find an excuse to.

Although it has a slick look, the metal construction also feels sturdy. What else can I say? That functionality is perfect, very speedy and also functions in plug-and-play. All that at a very low price. Definitely recommend it for a PRO DJ LINK setup by Pioneer (2xCDJ900's, DJM800)
The machine is also tiny, so I'd say the form factor is also a plus.
