This dark but wonderful little book appeared in 1938, when World War II was approaching. Seemingly Simenon based it on his own experiences two decades earlier, as a youthful newspaperman in Liège, before moving to Paris. In most of his writing he avoided any temptation to touch on history - giving his popular works a timeless (even a goldfish bowl) quality that is no doubt a part of their charm. But in this story, falling in the era of German occupation in Belgium and French occupation in Germany, he took on the historian's challenge briefly but brilliantly - not politically or militarily but in social and personal terms. I'm surprised this novel is not better known. For interwar malaise among uprooted younger Europeans, you can't beat it. The Maigret series was already underway, but this work has no connection.
