From Amazon

This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen

This beautifully written guide to a woman's fertility signs....packed with knowledge, wisdom, humor –a must for the bookshelf. -- Co-authors of The New Our Bodies, Ourselves

I went through and read some of the bad reviews this book got before adding my own, and I can't agree with any of them! Some say that it's only written for people who are really fertile, and not for people struggling with infertility....I disagree! I've been trying for a year now to get pregnant, I've been charting for about four months of that, and I've read all kinds of information online about infertility, but I was still amazed at the amount of information I didn't have. No, she can't tell you what's wrong with you, but she teaches you how to chart and be aware of what's going on with your body so that when you DO go in to see a fertility specialist you can speak intelligently with them rather than going in without a clue.
There were other reviews that made it sound like all the information she gave was basic, and only good for people who have the 28-day cycle. Wrong again! She emphasizes time and again that no two women are alike, everyone's cycle is different, even sometimes from month to month, but she teaches you how to properly chart it so that you can figure out what's going on. Maybe a stressful situation delayed your ovulation one month, or maybe you're not ovulating at all, but you can learn to figure these things out for yourself by charting.
One other review talked about it being full of "feminist rhetoric". I don't even know what she's talking about! I'm very conservative myself, and pretty old-fashioned in my viewpoints, but all Ms. Weschler talks about is taking charge of your own body and knowing how it works. It was amazing to me to read and realize how much I didn't know. I even went to my family doctor to tell him I was having trouble concieving and when I tried showing him my fertility charts all he said was, "Wow!

The book was not in the condition described. It was described as in "excellent" condition with all pages intact, but it was stained and quite obviously used, with some of the template chart pages missing. Still usable and I'm content to keep it, but not in the condition I expected.

This book is amazing! It taught me so much about my own body. I wish someone had given it to me during adolescence, so much more would have made sense. I picked up this book after trying to get pregnant for 6 months. My husband and I really thought something was wrong, we had started to try to time sex for ovulation and it never worked. I started using the book about a week into my cycle and by day 35 I did a pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant! Turns out that by trying to time sex around ovulation using traditional methods we were missing my actual ovulation by more than a week, as I had a really long cycle and short luteal phase (read the book and this will all make more sense). By the end of my cycle we were usually too tired to have sex since we'd been going at it so long, but with this method we identified the fertile days correctly and that was it!
Every mother should give her teenage daughter this book to learn about her body and every couple having difficulty conceiving should read it cover to cover!

This book is a must-read for every woman, whether or not you're trying to conceive or prevent pregnancy using these methods. The author is incredibly knowledgable, highlighting all sorts of things about your gynecological health that everyone woman should know. The methods the author describes to start charting yourself are fascinating pieces of information that illuminate you about your own cycle. Since reading this book I feel more at peace with my body.

I picked this book up to use the Fertility Awareness Method as a back up method of birth control. I was delighted to discover how effective the method is, and that it's not only based on basal temperature, but also on checking (and charting) differences in cervical fluid and cervical position. Before reading this book, those things seemed like a mystery to me, but it is amazingly simpler than I imagined. The whole process of charting also daunted me at first, but it literally takes a minute each day, and has sort of become a little extra bonding moment with my husband. The author recommends your partner getting involved in charting, and it really is a wise move :o)

She answers a ton of questions about irregular charts and problems you might be coming across in the very extensive appendixes, so this book is literally a tome of knowledge. However the writing is very clear and even entertaining sometimes, so it is not a difficult read.

I am so thankful for this book, and I recommend it to every woman of reproductive age. Pick it up ASAP!

With a five star rating from 630+ reviews, what more can be said? My two cents: In my opinion, it is a must read for all women (and would enlighten a few men!)
Very easy reading, written with humor and compassion. Don't let it's size scare you off. You'll blast through it in no time. Quick reading chapters with lots of diagrams! No super technical medical words.
If you are blessed with a daughter, empower her with FULL knowledge of what is going on with her body. (Parts are easy for newly menstruating girls to follow, but I would recommend the book mainly for teens 15 and up because of the more mature attention-span required! No giggly girls, please!)
If like me, you are trying desperately to have a child and are about to give in to the "high-tech" way, PLEASE read this first! Specifically giving signs a woman can easily observe herself to let her know when she is most able to concieve, this book is way beyond what your doctor tells you!
