These really really work. Of course, I have a child who is really into being read to, but he understands and, answers the questions appropriately with the examples provided.
Both books worked within days for us, and even though he's not hitting or biting anymore, he still brings the books out for a read.
The writing is great for keeping their attention, illustrations good support for what it is trying to teach (no pictures of biting just the positive stuff).
I like that it offers advice to the child on how to better react when the urge to bite might happen. I also like the tips for parents at the end of the book.
(Would of given it 5 stars, but I didn't like the part of 'let's count how many teeth you have' - because 1. he bites so I don't want to stick my fingers anywhere near his teeth to count, 2. I read this as a bedtime story most of the time & less interactive is better as I want him to get calm. But obviously not an issue for everyone, just for me (I skip over that part for now).)
Teeth Are Not for Biting approaches the issue of biting with great care and understanding. The book talks frankly about why children bite others, and also attempts to instill empathy into children who may be prone to biting. Probably the greatest strength of this book is its practical advice to children. Elizabeth Verdick presents alternatives to biting that are easy to understand, and more importantly, simple enough for most young children to do.
This book is a worthy new entry for preventing and teaching children about the harmful behavior of biting others.
