The rogue’s temptation would be her undoing…

Gemma Haverford knows exactly who she will marry: James Randolph, the man she’s had a secret understanding with for the last eleven years. With every letter written between them while he's been off at sea, their love has grown. Now they will be reunited with his return to England.

There’s just one problem. The man whose words she'd fallen in love with isn’t James at all…

Jasper Holland, a gentleman rogue of the first order, is trapped. Talked into a scheme by his best friend, he pretended to be James for eleven years as he wrote to Gemma, even though he'd promised James he’d break it off. But now with his return to England, his secret will come out – and he’ll lose the one woman he can’t live without.

What began as a game of words, now becomes a game of hearts, and Jasper will pay any price to call Gemma his.

Twenty-five-year-old Gemma Haverford is smart, sassy and nearing old maid status – but is nevertheless keeping suitors at bay because of an “understanding” she believes she has with her childhood friend, James Randolph who, along with his best friend, Jasper Holland, has been away at sea for the past eleven years. Gemma and James have been communicating via some heated correspondence which unbeknownst to her, has been written not by James but by Jasper, who has fallen in love with Gemma. Somewhat predictable, Tempted By a Rogue is nevertheless well written, the author’s prose being faithful to the period. The sexual tension builds nicely before quickly becoming ripe for release as things between Gemma and Jasper heat up (probably far more quickly than propriety allowed back in the day!). A particularly nice touch to the cast of characters was Lady Greenley, the town’s well-connected old matron, who seemed to know everyone’s business and was particularly astute in affairs of the heart – especially those of Gemma and Jasper. She added just the right amount of ribald humor and vulnerability to the storyline, making Tempted By a Rogue an enjoyable read.

Gemma Haverford is nearly on the shelf; she has been waiting for James Randolph for eleven years, while he was at sea. There was no lack of suitors, but James’ letters captured her heart. Gemma, James, and Jasper Holland had been childhood friends; Gemma has always been sweet on James, and then James and Jasper both left to join the navy. What Gemma didn’t know is that James had asked Jasper to write the letters for him, and to dump Gemma after a short while. Jasper had come to grow to like Gemma quite a bit, and was thrilled to receive her letters. James wasn’t too thrilled that Jasper had continued to correspond with Gemma, and when both men come back to England, James tells Jasper to compromise Gemma so he can be rid of her and marry the tart he recently met.

Although TEMPTED BY A ROGUE is a bit of a spin on Cyrano de Bergerac, it is not a remake. James is truly despicable, and while Jasper is a rogue, he cares about Gemma, and what fascinating characters they all are. Ms. Smith’s lush descriptions of the English gardens are breathtaking, the dialogues are delightful and flirtatious, and I read and re-read several sentences several times for the sheer beauty of the Ms. Smith’s lyrical prose. In spite of it all, Gemma fights back; she is not a dishrag, and Jasper fights for her. The characters are extremely complex; this novella is enthralling. And I absolutely adored a secondary character: Lady Greenley, she of the menacing parasol. A fabulous story!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Naughty! Sept. 25 2015
By Robin Surface - Published on

This was a nice little short story with a little spice to it.

While the story was quick, the author did a good job of fleshing out the characters.

It almost feels like this is the free introduction to a future full-length novel. There are lots of things here that could be expanded on. I really wanted to have more about James, who was a truly terrible person and deserved to have some misery sent his way by his new fiancé. To see him get his comeuppance could prove very entertaining. The outspoken matron who figures out the mystery was pretty funny, and could certainly be expanded to be a more integral character. There was lots of room to expand on this story.

The author’s writing style has a nice flow and this book would be a great lunchtime or weekend read when you’re looking for something that’s entertaining but not to serious and doesn't take too long to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Tempted By A Rogue” - Will Jasper Win Gemma’s Love? Oct. 9 2015
By Cheri Clay - Published on

Twenty-five year old Gemma Haverford lives in the town of Midhurst, West Sussex in the year 1817. It was a time where ladies are charming and ladylike. For eleven years she has avoided the hunt for a husband believing she would marry her childhood sweetheart. James Randolph was a midshipman with His Majesty’s Navy, however James was no gentleman, as he wouldn’t break it off with Gemma himself having his best friend and shipmate Jasper Holland do it for him. But Jasper couldn’t do it instead he continued to write her, leading her to believe the letters were from James meanwhile falling in love with her. James new plan is for Jasper is to compromise the naïve Gemma so that he could announce his engagement to someone else. The last letter… Gemma is to meet her James in the gardens away from chaperones and parents blindfolded so that he may surprise her…so mysterious and so exciting…

Lauren has created an exquisitely unique love triangle. Gemma believes she loves James yet doesn’t realize she really is in love with Jasper. James the cad wants nothing to do with her leaving Jasper to do his dirty work. Jasper clearly the rogue, but is determined to win the lady’s heart. The characters are powerful clearly ones you will love to hate with James and Jasper or find hilariously funny with Lady Greenley. Rich, detailed storyline, though short, is easy to be caught up in. Not really a chosen genre for me, but enjoyably well written. Will Jasper win Gemma’s love? “Tempted By A Rogue” is destined to be a sensational hit novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, titillating romance devotees should find irresistable Sept. 24 2015

Tempted by a Rogue, ISBN: 9780996207911, a romance in e-book format by Lauren Smith with an additional chapter from another forthcoming book.
The story's setting is Midhurst, West Sussex in 1817 where two of the town's resident sons, James Randolph and Jasper Holland having left in their early teens, are returning from eleven years' service together throughout the world in the Royal Navy. Gemma Haverford, after having been wooed by letter all of these years, is expecting to marry James. Unfortunately, James had become disenchanted and asked Jason to write and dissolve the supposed betrothal. Jason, having had some interest in Gemma when they were still youngsters, writes but procrastinates with `breaking off' the relationship. Instead, he continues to write and discovers Gemma's letters to be most intelligent, charming and in accord with his likes and dislikes. Because James has found someone new he wants to marry and has been informed of Jasper's lack of compliance with his request, insists that Jasper compromise Gemma so he will have a sound reason for disengaging from the unwanted relationship. Jasper attempts the seduction, finds himself completely enamored of the young woman, and the ensuing activities provide a charming, titillating tale of unleashed desire complicated by the mental struggle involving the apparent accompanying deceit, deception and betrayal.
The author has managed most adroitly to set forth, and stretch, a relatively simple plot into an extended delightful interlude that romance devotees should find irresistible.

4.0 out of 5 stars James, Gemma and Jasper are a brilliantly fun trio Sept. 23 2015

Want to spend the evening laughing, sighing and blushing along with a lovable female character? Love romance books? Don't want to spend a week waiting for the characters to get their acts together and do what you want them to?

Gemma is considered an almost old maid in her town. Her parents and her closest friend know that she and a local boy, James, promised to marry each other when they were older. James and his best friend Jasper joined the Navy and were away for over ten years. Gemma has been writing to James for the entire time and is madly, passionately in love with him. Little does she know that James no longer intends to marry her. In fact, James wasn't the one writing to her all those years, it was Jasper... and Jasper is madly in love with Gemma.

Jasper and James have returned home and it's time for them to admit to Gemma their deceit. James is now a bitter womanizer and his best friend is a thoughtful, sweet man. It was a lot of fun to follow Gemma and her boys as they admitted their lies and love. Gemma is not a silly, careless girl. She is lovable and spunky.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short book. Vivid, visual and vivacious are the best descriptive words I can use to describe the writing, the characters and the story. Definitely going on my list to books to read when I'm in bed sick and needing to be cheered up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Good Romantic Adventure Sept. 25 2015
By Veritas Vincit - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The frequency of my romantic novel reading has increased in recent months, primarily because my wife has been on a major kick. At first, I wasn't a big fan, because I thought the language was often trite and hackneyed. I wasn't disparaging of the entire genre, but I definitely had my opinions about it. However, I have been impressed how the romance genre seems to be improving over the years. It's no longer defined by cheap pulp that has very little plot, and simply offers steamy descriptive scenes that vaguely tie together. Tempted by A Rogue is decidedly different than that. We see a real relationship outlined in stunning letters and confessions of passion, and we also see a unique role reversal of genders, where Jasper is so desperate not to lose this woman, and only fears rejection when she discovers who he really is.

The tension in these pages is palpable, and there was considerable time spent in detailing the setting, providing backstory, keeping the flow of the narrative even, and detailed edits to sharpen certain sections. I think this was a labor of love, and while it has plenty of traditional romance novel elements, it is a higher caliber - and certainly a more interesting story. Nicely Done.
