Product Description

Product Description

Did you know that much of modern Amsterdam was underwater until the 10th century, when reclamation work began, allowing the establishment of a tiny fishing village beside the Amstel river? Or that it was the world’s wealthiest city during the Golden Age of the 17th century?

‘Ten Must-See Sights: Amsterdam’ does exactly what it says on the tin, giving you the background and history on the city’s top ten ‘must-see’ attractions. We don’t fill endless pages with hard-to-read maps and difficult-to-download photos; there are ten chapters of text, one on each attraction, all written by our team of experienced travel writers.

HASH(0x9fcc59e4) out of 5 stars Very Informative book! April 8 2013

This book in extremely informative. As a traveler, this book tells you everywhere you should visit in Amsterdam. It tells you the bad, the good and the ugly of Amsterdam! Just by reading this book, I know the best places and museums to visit when arrive in Amsterdam. Old Amsterdam seems to be breathtaking. It is described as having 90 islands and many waters with 400 bridges, amazing! If you are going to travel to Amsterdam or you need to know more about the country I highly recommend this book.It is like a travel guide to the city.

Real succinct info on what the author(s) consider to be the top 10 attractions in Amsterdam. Book is pretty much in agreement as to what makes the upper half cross-referencing with my favorite source 'TripAdvisor' including Anne Frank house, Canal Ring, National museum and Van Gogh museum tho you could always debate the order. If you're looking for a companion piece to consider (currently free of charge) might I also recommend "Hermitage Amsterdam: Highlights from the Hermitage Museum St Petersburg" by Marko Kassenaar which does a fine job focusing only on this one top 40 of 400 Amsterdam attractions via TripAdvisor reviews. Both were good books worthy of mention.

I recently went to Amsterdam and I used this guide to help me select sites to visit (after all,I had only two days). It was truly helpful in helping me decide what to see and what to defer. Short, easy to read with good insights. Highly recommended tour guide.

Instead of the odd padding (e.g., a review of the handicapped facilities at the Van Gogh museum) this book would have been better served by a few maps and an index.
