By the time her first variety special aired on CBS television Thanksgiving Eve 1998, Celine Dion's reputation as one of the most acclaimed entertainers in history was solidified. By the close of the decade, she would become the world's best selling female artist, selling more than 160 million albums. The television special for These Are Special Times was a ratings champion, ranking #1 for the night and garnering two Emmy Award nominations.
It's almost impossible to believe it didn't already exist, but now that it does, you can bet the sure-to-go-platinum These Are Special Times will turn up under many a Christmas tree this year (the perfect gift for the person who has everything?). The prolific princess of pop has thrown together a mixture of contemporary and traditional holiday favorites, bordering on too-cute and kitschy only on the intro to "Feliz Navidad." For many, Dion is an acquired taste, but even naysayers may enjoy her rare moments of restraint on a smoky version of "Blue Christmas." "The Prayer," a duet with Andrea Bocelli, is set to become this season's "Time to Say Goodbye," but it will have to battle it out with the R. Kelly duet, "I'm Your Angel," first. --Rebecca Wallwork

I know that people have their negative opinions of Celine, and I have some to as I am only a moderate fan. However, I must say that this album is thoroughly enjoyable. Christmas albums are often dismissed as just a safe piece of product to earn some cash. While this album is pretty safe (like most of Celine's releases), it's supposed to be for enjoyment around the holidays and Christmas albums are supposed to be light. Her voice and her style of music work well for the seasonal genre. Standout tracks include:
"Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" - an original Christmas ballad about showing love all year round, and not just on Christmas.
"Brahm's Lullaby" - a very soothing rendition of this classic lullaby. She sounds very good went her voice is restrained.
"Blue Christmas" - a fantastic jazzy remake of the song made popular by the King, Elvis Presley. I love his version, and Celine does this song justice.
"The Prayer" - This is a duet with Andrea Bocelli. They both have really strong voices yet different musical styles so they compliment each other.
"I'm Your Angel" - This #1 hit isn't a Christmas song, but it fits well with this CD. R. Kelly sounds great, and this unlikely duet is very nice. I'm not surpirsed it was a huge success.
So, I can honestly say that this CD is good. Regardless if you are a big fan or not, I think you will actually enjoy this album. Give it a chance.
From her interpretations of timeless classics like o holy night, to more upbeat, unexpected tunes like Feliz navidad, you will be smiling through this whole album.
just simply stunning
despite all this, i think the cd could have some better songs
it has a great mix of tracks, new & traditional, classical, pop/rock & ballad, & really captures the essence of the season,
it can perhaps sound a little melancholy, but is a great release from the manic christmas music where we're all supposed to be having such a mad, wild, time.
for me, this is a true, traditional christmas, warm, loving, sentimental, thoughtful, reflective, magical, filled with hope & enchantment. for the record, my fave is "the prayer" - this song is amazing, it sends shivers down the spine!
Celine Dion's These Are Special Times is an amazing collection of holiday classics. Celine Dion knows how to make a masterpiece!!
"O Holy Night" has the most stunning arrangement for this song I've heard and it's perfect for her range and pitch perfect vocal talent and skill.
"Don't Save It All for Christmas Day" is new and charming, once you hear this song you know you bought a winning cd.
"Blue Christmas" is just adorable without being cutesy.
"Another Year Has Gone By" - I just love this song, so hopeful and optimistic.
"Magic of Christmas Day" she hits some goosebump producing notes in this one!!
"Ave Maria", "O Come All Ye Faithful" are solemn and lovely,
"Christmas Song" - some have sung this better but it's great here too.
"Prayer" - What can anyone say about THIS song! It's absolutely stunning.
"Brahms' Lullaby" very sweet - some French lyrics that make it even more intimate.
"Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" just ok I'm afraid.
"I'm Your Angel" - big hit for good reason.
"Feliz Navidad" - "Cloches du Hameau" everybody sings and sings some more - gets ya into a caroling spirit!
