The barriers that separate fantasy from reality are shattered in this stylish, mind-jarring thriller, where two parallel worlds collide in a paroxysm of deception, madness and murder. On the thirteenth floor of a corporate tower, high-tech visionary Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko, The Long Kiss Goodnight) and his high-strung colleague, Whitney (Vincent D'Onofrio, Men In Black), have opened the door to an amazing virtual world - circa 1937 Los Angeles. But when the powerful leader of their secret project (Armin Mueller-Stahl, Shine, The X-Files) is discovered slashed to death, Hall himself becomesthe prime suspect. Arriving from Paris is the beautiful and mysterious Jane Fuller (Gretchen Mol, Rounders), claiming to be the murder victim's daughter. Her instant, magnetic attraction to Hall onlyfurther blurs the lines of what is real. Is he the killer? Is the inscrutable Jane somehow connected? To find the answers, Hall must cross the boundaries into the simulated reality he has helped create
Computer scientist Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) finds something extremely important. Knowing that he's marked for assassination, he leaves a message in the virtual reality world he's designed, hoping it will be found by colleague Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko). Hall is a suspect in Fuller's murder and indeed finds a bloody shirt in his house, with no recollection of what he did the night before. Hall plunges headlong into Fuller's world (a re-creation of l937 Los Angeles) to try to unravel the slaying and is soon knee-deep in confusion and trouble. What this film lacks in character depth and plot cohesiveness it makes up for in special effects and high concept. Fans of films like Blade Runner, Dark City, eXistenZ, and even the game Sim City should find this appealing. Of course, there's the question of letting the computers do all the heavy lifting in films while the humans walk through the plot (an all-too-familiar scenario in 1999), but the re-creation of '30s Los Angeles is certainly something to see, pallid script and acting or not. The Thirteenth Floor is a stylish modern-day noir that raises questions about technology versus reality, all the while wrapped up in a murder-mystery story line. --Jerry Renshaw --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

What about "The Thirteenth Floor"? Believe it or not...I really liked it!
It puts another spin to movies like the MATRIX (Note: This movie shouldn't be compared to the MATRIX) in which it covers high-tech, alternate worlds and the movie was done very well. Although it had some sections that were loose in the movie, the movie all in all was pretty good. I'm not sure how much it cost them to make this movie but the way they made the high-tech and the 1930 scenes were visually pleasing.
The video was very good in this drama but what I enjoyed the most for this DVD is the sound. Whoah! A scene with a gun shot and the glass breaking...one of my favorite demo segments to show friends of the capabilities of good 5.1 digital surround. I love it!
Now, the extra's. I wish their was deleted scenes included with the extra's but you get quite a bit of extras, not as many as I wanted though. I wanted to see more after the movie was done. The music video by the Cardigans was a nice extra and the theatrical trailer to test the sound on your 5.1 surround sound system with Godzilla is nice. I don't have a DVD-rom, so I can't comment on that. The galleries were short but you see what kind of plans they had for the movie and they did a good job with the scenery.
All in all, this is a DVD worth buying (if it's on sale). Many movie buyers who are fiscally conservative will skimp on this movie because they want the Matrix or a movie with major big major name actors. It's a shame because this movie is good and worth watching. The movie is worth taking a look because it's pretty good.
i am not going to give out much about the story 'cause that's exactly what is fascinating about this movie. but i can tell you what makes it such a unique experience for me. there are two important (or weird for some of you) questions that are confusing me all the time, which are why are we born in this world and what will happen after our lives when this world come to an end. the thirteenth floor provides probable answers to both questions. may be our world is just a simulation program manipulated by some higher intelligent beings from another planet or by a computer tech from the future so that everything we see in the world are only someone's fantasy or thoughts. no matter you believe or not, the thirteenth floor may make you think and reevaluate your current beliefs.
even if you do not find the story interesting, you cannot deny that the cinematography and production design are superb. the elegant re-creation of los angeles in the thirties will definitely shine in your eyes in contrast to the coarse and vulgar tone of the present. in fact, i could not find any flaw in the photography work, every shot is just done fantastically!Read more ›
I think that predates the MATRIX by a few years. Plus, the MATRIX isn't all that original anyway as even communicated by the screen-writers. Can you say PKD?
I feel confident that it will become a cult classic with time as more see and appreciate it.
The plot thickens, and I don't want to spoil it. I thought this movie should have done much better at the box office, and possibly it would have if not for the fact that The Matrix blew it and quite a few ships out of the water in the virtual-reality flick department. But The Thirteenth Floor has its own charms, and is well worth enjoying on its own terms.

This got overshadowed by the similarly-themed MATRIX which came out at about the same time...but it deserves to be seen. It's a VERY good movie.Published on Aug. 12 2013 by Michael Milley
