You know what made the movie so good? That it was so close to the real thing. And thus This Is Spinal Tap , their debut, is not a bad metal record as well as being @#$%! hilarious! This reissue includes, for the first time, the single version of Christmas with the Devil .
One of the greatest ironies surrounding This Is Spinal Tap is that it's actually better than many of the recordings it parodies. Songs like "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight," "Hell Hole," "Heavy Duty," and even "Stonehenge" are fun, 1980s-style rockers that any closet hair-band fan will enjoy, and "Sex Farm" and "Big Bottom" are simply hilarious by any standard. There's also the hippie-drippy "Listen to Me (the Flower People)" (even funnier if you've seen Rob Reiner's film of the same title), although Michael McKean and Christopher Guest singing "Cry, Cry, Cry All the Way Home" is sadly absent. The CD does lose some of its entertainment value if you haven't seen the film, but its mix of comedy and unabashed pop metal makes it the perfect party album. --Genevieve Williams

St. Hubbins: This is the demo cover, right?!
Manager: No, this is it, this is the cover.
Nigel: I see... it's black. Yes... you look at it and say, "How much more black could it be?" And the answer is, "None. None more black."
These days, Spinal Tap could probably get away with the original cover, as described by the publicist (Fran Drescher): "A woman on all fours, greased up, with a dog collar around her neck, and a man's glove in her face, asking her to smell the glove?!!"
St. Hubbins: We're *making fun* of that stuff! I mean, if we were serious, I'd see your point. But we don't *really* want her to smell the glove!
Nigel: Yes we do.
St. Hubbins: Well, I mean, not *over and over*!
Okay... I'm just quoting the movie, and almost every line is quote out loud funny. The DVD is the same price as the cd, so I would highly recommend getting the movie first... and the cd second -- nothing else is "more black!"
A quick funny story: In an interview, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean discussed recent Spinal Tap concerts. The two, and Christopher Guest, dress up as their "A Mighty Wind" characters (folk group "The Folksmen" )-- and open for themselves! The topper? The fans boo The Folksmen off the stage!! The group goes backstage, changes gear, and kicks it as - "direct from Hell" - Spinal Tap!!!
