Product Description

20 years later, this star-studded saga (Richard Chamberlain, Barbara Stanwyck, Christopher Plummer ) is still the second-highest-rated TV miniseries ever. What's amazing, though, is that no soundtrack LP came out, even though this epic featured some of Henry Mancini's best-loved themes. This 2-CD set rights that wrong-prepare to revisit the Outback and enjoy the LONG-overdue release of this beautiful Mancini score!

I just received my CD of the Thorn Birds Soundtrack from Amazon.com. I have always loved the theme song with the hauntingly beautiful dulcimer music which plays throughout the 2 disc CD. The first disc starts off with the amazing theme song, which has the incredible dulcimer playing at the very beginning and throughout the entire song. This theme song is absolutely thrilling! The quality of sound of every piece of music is perfect. There are 2 discs. The first disc has 23 songs and the second disc has 25 songs. Also included with the CD is a wonderfully interesting and informative brochure that details Mr. Mancini's life, and how he came to write the score, and in detail how he sought to find the perfect theme song for this wonderful mini-series. Did you know it took Mr. Mancini 8 days to find somebody who could play the dulcimer? The music is absolute perfection for the Thorn Birds mini-series which won 6 Emmy Awards in 1982-83. Every song is amazing.
Having this CD means I can listen to my favorite pieces over and over.
I am so thankful I purchased this item. It's no wonder I could never find this piece of music until now - it has only been released for the very first time in 2004! It was released in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Mr. Mancini's passing. The music industry finally realized what they had to produce!
I highly recommend this CD - everybody should have it. It is a treasure, especially in the memory of Henry Mancini - one of the most talented composers and musicians of our time.
Thank you Amazon.com for having this wonderful treasure that I could purchase and enjoy for years to come.
It should become a collector's item.

okay, hear goes...being the first one to bring to the consumers attention of this recording being incomplete. its still INCOMPLETE !!!! with that.. i'll tell you.. the rest of the recording is fine!! but the fact of the matter remains with reviewer's from ma, to nj, making explainations or excuses for an unfinished product its still INCOMPLETE. being one who so looked forward to this cd i about did cartwheels when i found this at the the store ...could hardly wait to get home and listen to the MAIN TITLE!! after all this was the main feature of the cd , the big cheese, the head honcho of the whole bunch, but was dissapointed to find THE DULCIMER track was indeed missing !!!so for you folks out there with no musical inclinations, hear are the fact's in musical terms. the MAIN TRACK ( meggies theme )starts with 4 measures of music with smaller amounts of music like autoharp included, then there are 4 measures of music with the DULCIMER TRACK that SHOULD be there ,followed by 2 measures again without the dulcimer and again it repeats this with 4 more measures of music with the DULCIMER TRACK followed by 2 measures of less forceful music before it then crecendo's to the full orchastra of the 2nd half of MEGGIES THEME in the main title. so any amount of reasoning by folks who do not know what they are talking about , SIT DOWN, LISTEN , KEEP QUIET AND PAY ATTENTION!!!! besides how dare they mess up meggies theme!!!! and now you know ...the rest of.. the story!

It took more than twenty years, until there appeared a soundtrack album for "The Thorn Birds". Originally, Warner wanted to issue a double LP, when the series had its first run. The budget was afterwards cut down to a single LP and finally, the album never got released. Although, "The Thorn Birds" theme appeared on numerous Mancini compilations over the years, this new Varese Sarabande album is the definite winner!
Although Henry Mancini is best known for his scores for romantic comedies ("Breakfast At Tiffany's"), he seldom, if ever, got the chance to create a symphonic romantic score. The score for "The Thorn Birds" combines symphonic elements to underscore the melodramatic events of the storyline, Mancini's unique melodic gift and the famous duclimer sound to characterize Australia's giant extension (although the camera for the series never saw Australia). Of course, the two disk set can't reproduce the underscore for eight hours of classic television, but everything that's here is pure magic. Interestingly, the producers tended to include most of Mancini's underscore, rather than the source cues (a wise decision!). In addition to the great score, the booklet includes great liners, that tell the story of the score and give you some information about its composer.
So, all I can say is: get this one! "The Thorn Birds" is far more than just the two themes that appeared on the old 45's and on various CD incarnations.

UNBELIEVABLY THIS IS A INCOMPLETE RECORDING, after waiting 20 years for this wonderful soundtracktrack. track # 1 has NO LEAD DULCIMER MELODY LINE !!!!!! which is why i bought this recording to begin with , as any true fan of the thorn birds knows we rememmber this beautiful dulcimer on the main title and ITS NOT THERE , it sounds like a demo recording. that would be like buying doctor zhivago without the balalika in lara's theme.(which by the way rhino records did a wonderful job in their reissue cd ) imagine in this day and time a massive boo-boo like this??? i am a professional musician and always make sure recordings are complete before it goes out the door. and to the reviewer from az. you might want to listen to track one again!!!! and to AMAZON .COM itself check your supplies of this cd and listen to track one # 1 main tile.incredibly dissapoiting as ive taken back three copies already.. hoping there might be a peplicating error. no such luck , the question is what is going to be done about this. thanks
