Beautifully written novel by a poet
January 29, 2014 - Published on Amazon.com
Anthony Lawrence is a poet, and he uses that talent in this novel to create a very real and terrifyingly whimsical at times story. It's a story about a boy named James who you follow almost as a rider in the back seat of the motor inside his head through his trials and tribulations growing up, and learning to be "normal" with schizophrenia. The book has moments that are so richly detailed it's like eating a fine chocolate or looking at a beautiful painting - these parts throughout stick with you long after you've read the book through. It is written in an odd style, but if you are able to deal with people chatting online or text speaking (which the book doesn't do....) you should be able to follow the rhythm of the authors writing with little issue. I couldn't put it down once I read the first chapter, and I recommend it to people when we get into a talk about books.
chaotic and schizophrenic
May 2, 2010 - Published on Amazon.com
This type of writing exhausts me. Maybe for folks who read a chapter or two per day, or an occasional book on a plane, but if you are a hardcore reader you may find this story nauseating and lurching, as the character, a boy I'd like to like, tells his tale in long rambling sentences to mimic (I guess) the thought processes of how the author thinks a schizophrenic thinks. Maybe it is poetic; maybe it is brilliant. All I know is that there are very few books I don't think I can make it through the second half of the book...I'll update if I manage to finish.
