This book was extremely useful and convenient for a recent trip to Vienna. It was my first purchase of an Eyewitness Top Ten book and won't be my last. I like how compact the book is - took up hardly any space in my day bag. There is just enough info on different sites, etc that it's not an overload. They tell you the high(or low!) points and move on. Perfect. Highly recommend.

HASH(0xb38923e4) out of 5 stars Compact, concise; good advice with great maps. Dec 9 2009

Having only four days in Vienna, we wanted to pack in the most while keeping an eye on expenses. The "Top 10" guide greatly facilitated the efficient organization of our sightseeing, cultural, and dining experiences. Took the guide's advice and saved/saw the most by using the airport train and hop on/off two day tour bus pass. The included easy to read compact city center map complimented the guide. It's not necessary to purchase a separate city map.

HASH(0xb38e10f0) out of 5 stars Vienna Top 10 is great Nov. 27 2009

Very useful book as are all the TOP 10 books. Gives you good information in a quick orderly format. Maps are okay but a little small. The spots discussed in the guide could be denoted better on the maps. Otherwise, this is well worth buying and handy to have while touring.

HASH(0xb38e103c) out of 5 stars Outstanding guide, very portable May 15 2011
By L. S. Reed - Published on
Format: Paperback
I like to do thorough research before a trip and frequently use the "big" travel books. But unless you're visiting an area for a month there sometimes is more information than you can use. They're also not that portable, which means they're less useful as guides DURING the trip, and sometimes their maps aren't that easy to use.

This guide avoids all those problems. As with all DK Eyewitness travel guides, it's lavishly illustrated with photos, which help you see what places really look like, and it has excellent maps.

It's a perfect "take with" book. We spent 5 days in Vienna recently (stayed a block from St. Stephens, right in the middle of things) and we used this book constantly. Vienna is a wonderful walking city and this book was easy to tote; no travel guide is useful out on the town if you left it in your room. We typically start the day with a general idea where we're headed but like to improvise specific destinations, so we constantly need to check the map and look up attractions. This guide is ideal for that. I had several guides but this wound up being the one I used; it had the best detailed maps and just the right amount of information.

HASH(0xb38e1dec) out of 5 stars Very disappointing -- Kindle edition is completely useless May 21 2012

I am generally a huge fan of the Eyewitness guides -- they are always my first pick when I am going somewhere new. I love the "Top 10" guides for when my visit to a city is short and I am able to pick just a few places to go and know I will also be provided with a handy pocket transit map. The translation of this one to a Kindle edition, though, was disastrous -- Eyewitness guides are nothing without maps and pictures but, when the Kindle-ized this one, they must have lost the majority of the images and all useful maps. There were some, mostly thumbnail, pictures, but they were in a resolution that did not allow them to enlarge nicely. The map of the top 10 sites, could only be seen without seeing the corresponding list of the 10 sites. Same for the map of the top 10 restaurants, top 10 monuments and memorials, etc. Maps of major sites, such as the features of the Schonbrunn's gardens, can only be seen with no labels or accompanying text at all, translating them from maps into meaningless collections of rectangles of varying colors -- the same was sadly true of all the maps to key features of major sites. Can I get my money back?

I would like to blame all of my complaints on the poor translation of the book into a Kindle edition, but I also think it's fair to say there's a shortage of good content. There should have been some more Top 10 lists included. I might have listed them in their entirety in this review. Top 10 Singapore and Top 10 San Diego and all the other Top 10 books all are so much more helpful.

HASH(0xb38e1c6c) out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it! April 15 2012

Format: Paperback
Do not go to Vienna without this book! I read this book before going and was able to get an idea of what Vienna was about, but when I arrived, this book did not leave my hands! This guide divides Vienna into sections. We set out our agenda according to sections in the book. The street-by-street map was invaluable and we were never lost. I am the worst with directions, but I knew exactly where I was during each day. With the maps, I easily navigated the entire city! The cutaways and guides to the various museums and attractions were also invaluable. We were able to walk into any attraction and know what the star features were and not have to miss a thing. We did not have to buy the extra tour books in each museum because our Eyewitness Guide gave us all the information we need and then some. Not only was I the navigator, but I was our personal tour guide. With the book, I was able to read out loud to my friend and tell him about everything we saw in Vienna. There were many other tourist with the Eyewitnes Guides in their hands and I was pleasantly surprised to see the book in so many different languages. A tourist even came up to me at the Schonbrunn Palace asking me where I got the book because she saw so many people with it, and she was disappointed when I said I got it in Canada because she was ready to pick up a copy immediately.

You can forget the credit cards, but DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THIS ONE!
