Review

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

“Ruthlessly probing and logical, Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith take the reader on a whirlwind tour of the myriad toxins that we encounter in cosmetics, water, paints, electromagnetic devices—all the things that cross our paths as we just live our lives. If you’ve ever wondered whether the shampoo you use might contribute to cancer risk, or whether there was any merit to all those ‘detox’ program ads you see, then this book will help you understand the real story. These authors have created a truly indispensable and enlightening guide to living in the twenty-first century.”
—William Davis, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health and Wheat Belly Cookbook

“Everyone concerned about hazardous chemicals should read Toxin Toxout. This informative and amusing book provides a much-needed road map through the varied detox approaches on the market today and the challenges posed by ever-growing mountains of waste. But the most important takeaway is that we must protect ourselves from toxins by engaging as citizens and not just as responsible consumers, to prevent ‘toxIN’ while we ‘toxOUT’ the economy.” —Annie Leonard, creator, The Story of Stuff

Toxin Toxout admirably demonstrates how important our everyday product choices are—from the food we buy to the cars we choose to drive. I truly believe that you cannot achieve hormonal balance without reducing your toxin exposure and improving your internal detoxification systems. Toxin Toxout provides us with a much-needed guide on how to live—and maintain—a toxin-free lifestyle.”
—Dr. Natasha Turner, author of the #1 national bestsellers The Hormone Diet and The Supercharged Hormone Diet

“We all owe a debt of gratitude to Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith for slowly poisoning themselves for our benefit. And perhaps even more, for figuring out how to unpoison themselves. This is a fascinating book that has made me change my daily routines.”
—A.J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of Drop Dead Healthy, My Life as an Experiment and The Know-It-All

We live in a world laden with toxins that is all around us, from the air we breath to the food we eat. Even taking a shower or bath has its hazard; like opening pores to admit the chlorine and other chemicals the water suppliers "clean" the water with, the shampoos and soapes used basically entering our system as toxins. Where to start to attempt at least to have a healthier life, for yourself and your family? It is really overwhelming for most people, but these two guys, Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith make it seem possible to make better choices and avoid some of the everyday onsloughts of toxins.

Loved "Slow Death By Rubber Duck" (the authors' first book) and greatly appreciated this follow up. It is vital to have this information out there and bring more awareness to the nature of our toxin-filled world today, and hence our toxic bodies. The authors did a great job bringing the clear message home of how important it is to choose organic food and natural personal care products, as well as minimize toxins in our home and other environments. It is an empowering book for sure!

It is a smooth, flowing read, and culminates with a great ending chapter to focus on the top ten practical solutions to keeping toxins out and helping to get them out. The detox sections could have been expanded upon in many other ways, but I understand and value the perspective it was presented from given the authors' environmental, rather than nutrition or holistic backgrounds. This therefore has to be taken into consideration if one is expecting a detailed detox section. Ultimately what the best takeaway message here was, is that there is no, one quick fix for detox....it is a LIFESTYLE based on what we choose to eat, put on our body, subject ourselves to, etc., on a daily basis.

Finally, I know this is a topic that can scare some people enough to attack it as "fear mongering" or such, but avoiding or attacking it doesn't help anyone. This is what is, we live in a toxic world that WE have all helped to create and contribute to through our daily purchasing choices. So let's not put our heads in the sand, and attack the messenger(s), rather let's use the message in a way we are ready for and make the changes in our daily lives that make most sense to us where our health and wellness is concerned.

ToxIn ToxOut is written by the authors of the best seller "Slow Death by Rubber Duck". I believe this may well be the most important book that you will read this year for your health and the health of your family. As a partner in a USDA organic skin care company, Shoosha Truly Organic[...] I am very aware of the profound effect of environmental toxins and toxins that are contained in the food and personal care products we consume/use every day. I am also aware of the potentially devastating cumulative effects these toxins take on our children and ourselves.

This amazing book is both very informative, full of excellent and cutting edge knowledge, but it is presented in a very readable format. It is full of great advise and great wit as well. Rick and Bruce, both highly regarded scientists, tell you not only the problems, but also and very importantly, how you can reduce the problems, in large part for you and your family. This book contains practical and highly doable advise on how to drastically cut down your and your family's chemical load. This book is a "how to" manual to have a better and healthier life. I cannot express my full gratitude to Dr. Rick Smith and Dr. Bruce Lourie for their ground-breaking and top-notch work! Check out their website as well at [...]

Well written. Easy to understand. Thought provoking!!! Now we need a plan to tell those who have so successfully polluted the environment and ourselves that we are aware and will not support them. I guess we have to talk with our money. Just do not buy the products that are not in our best interest to use.

As someone who’s fairly health conscious, I’ve long been concerned with what I’m putting in my body, especially when it came to food. After reading Toxin Toxout, I plan to be a lot more conscious with just about everything around me; there are chemicals everywhere and they get into our bodies too easily, not just through eating, but by breathing, drinking, through our skin and just by living. What I like most about Toxin Toxout is that it raises the alarm about the thousands of toxic chemicals in everyday life, but then goes on to offer pretty simple, and necessary, ways to avoid them (without living in a bubble).

The authors, Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie, give a personal narrative to accompany a lot of the science behind the chemicals they touch on, and they sure don’t hold back when it comes to sharing their (frequently) embarrassing anecdotes.

Toxin Toxout is a great wake-up call, but it also feels very positive. If we all start making small but measureable changes – collectively we might just be able to leave things a little better for future generations, and protect our own health at the same time.
