Note: This is not a stand-alone book. If you're interested in this book—and you should be!—you're going to want to read
Trajectory Book 1 (New Providence)
first.
I'll copy this directly from my review of Trajectory book 1: Robert M. Campbell has created a fabulous story of exploration and survival on (and off) Mars. Unlike many other Mars-centred books I've read, his science is rooted in the here-and-now, with small, but entirely plausible, bits of science fiction thrown in, like fusion reactors. There's no artificial gravity here, and no warp drive—which makes the peril these characters are in all the more real. Think the seafaring yarns of the past, with timeframes in weeks and months, not seconds.
Book 2 picks up *directly* after book 1, which I'm thankful for, as I wanted to find out what happened to all these characters, about whom I've started caring dearly. A lot more character development happens in this book, particularly in the first third; unfortunately, I found that a little bit of a let-down after the action-packed climax of book 1. Book 2, however, picks up *greatly*, and I found myself once again unable to put down the book once I'd reached its climax.
Like the first book, this book doesn't wrap up these character's story, or the story of the colony of New Providence on Mars. If you're anything like me, you're going to want to continue on to the third book,
Seedfall: New Providence Series Book 3
. That's exactly what I'm off to do after submitting this review!
(Disclaimer: Robert M. Campbell is a friend of mine, but I bought this book with my own money, and wrote this review unasked.)

Excellent

This is book two in the series and you really need to read book one before reading this. The story continues from where it left off in book one with the Mars colony mining ships trying to get back to Mars while trying to escape the "mysterious object" which has already destroyed two of their ships. While those at the space station try to determine what the object is and how it knows what their ships are doing, one ship prepares for a fatal showdown as other ships race to provide what help they can. The book ends with many questions unanswered and the fate of ships crews still in jeopardy. A very good series! I recommend it.

Interesting but dislike the run-on narrative style.

I am writing this review based on all three volumes available. I liked this hard science fiction series. The science was credible and I felt it had good character development. They are certainly page turners. However... What I didn't care for was the run-on narrative style of the series, just dropping the reader at the end of each volume with little cloture in the stories. I've read and have liked many series and I realize that an author's story sometimes must end a volume with less than a elegant ending point, but this author has done this over three volumes. For me, its getting tiresome and I doubt that I will read any more of this series.

Engrossing hard SF.

The first book in this series is remarkable in that it's tense and suspenseful and fascinating despite the fact that NOTHING actually happens! It's really well written, and if you like realistic, hard SF, you should find yourself totally engrossed. But fair warning, there's no conclusion in Book One. This second book is equally well written, and has a bit more action, and finally delivers a resolution, but some of the story threads are left hanging for Book Three, which doesn't appear to be out yet.

Gripping SF

If you like science fiction stories that have believable science and well-written characters in an exciting plot, then the Trajectory series will be right up your alley. The author doesn't beat you over the head with the science like some writers do, but it's all clearly well-researched and plausible. The characters are all relatable, so you really care about their well-being. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series!

Traditional space opera done well, thank you Mr. Campbell
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2016Verified Purchase
A underground colony of 50,000 on Mars and a small space station overhead are all that remain of humanity. Running mining ships out to the astroid belt brings in needed raw materials helping the colony survive if not thrive. Then another threat appears. Well drawn characters face one crisis after another in a desperate struggle. Not hard science fiction so much as intelligently written with the assumption that the reader is also intelligent. I like compliments and look forward to the next book and there will be a next book,Mr. Campbell has the habit of leaving people between cliffs and his ending leaves plenty on the table for the future. Recommended.
