Transcendence. The title alone suggests that the material can transcend the story and the acting, to greater heights. After all, Wally Pfister isn't a bad director of photography, having been on many Christopher Nolan films.

That... turned out to be not the case.

Transcendence is a movie that tackles the issue of technology and our dependence to it, as well as the two sides of it: the benefits and the dangers. Yet we get the feeling that the film could have gotten a lot further in its message, had it tried a bit harder. The message never leaves the "topical" sense and many clichéd scenes as well as plot holes point out to more problematic issues. It's still about "goods vs. evils" of technology, being the 21st Century's new Witch hunt.

To be fair, though, the actors do try their best to grant a good performance, starting with Rebecca Hall, the heart and soul of the movie. As it progresses, her character gets swallowed in this idea of hers, and no matter how far fetched some ideas are, Ms. Hall delivers a heartfelt performance of a scientist broken of her love, doing everything she can to maintain him "alive". Mr. Depp provides a slightly colder interpretation of his character, and given the story, it's not too off and has its charms.

Don't look for meaningful special features because there aren't. Lots of trailers with less than 15 minutes to spare of interviews, EPK material and such. Don't even waste your time on it, it's on auto-repeat mode.

Transcendence could have been, should have been a much better movie. With its core story and characters, there was much possibilities for debates, philosophical ideas and ways to experiment with these ideas, but alas, we get but a fraction of it and by half the movie's mark, most people will have guessed how it ends and how it gets there.

This is very good movie carried by Rebecca Hall who is the real star of the movie not Johnny Depp. The premise of existence inside a computer has been explored many times before but is better done in this movie than most of the other ones I've seen such as Lawnmower Man which is also a good movie to watch with a similar theme.

By The Movie Guy HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on Jan. 12 2015
Format: DVD
The film starts out in Berkley and there is no electrical power...anywhere, perhaps. It then flashes back 5 years as there is a clash between "neo-Luddites" and those that want to create artificial intelligence. Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) has the last project that wasn't destroyed...although he himself took a bullet laced with radioactive polonium and is now dying.

Will's wife and colleague Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) has the idea of sticking an electrode in Will's brain and uploading him to the computer. Will connects to the Internet and unlocks secrets of nanotechnology. He wants to use the knowledge to cure the sick, clean the air, clean the water, regrow forests, and create an army of followers with brain implants. He would become a "God" which scares a whole bunch of people.

The special effects were decent, but not overwhelming. Johnny Depp was lifeless in his role, as are too many science fiction characters. The film asks several questions to ponder, such as how will we know when a computer has consciousness? What are the limits we will allow robots to control our lives?

The film utilizes nanotechnology, perhaps beyond its limits. There is a new generation of devices coming out using new substances such as graphene which will make everything we own obsolete. BTW, Government facilities such as depicted in the film utilizes iris scans in Top Secret areas and not simple card swipes.

This is a slow paced cerebral science fiction film that is not for everyone.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs that I recall. No nudity. Brief covered sex scene.

More substance at its core than most of this year's flicks. Well directed and acted. Entertaining. Some shortcomings should not overcloud the overall quality of this movie. Ties-in well themes it leads throughout. One of the better movies this year.

This movie is for people who loves possibilities of a different future. The future using microscopic robots to heal the body in every aspect. For one men dream is another's fear of evolution. The battle of let God be God and let human be human, with no chance of human enhancing our gifts. Well that is in a nut shell. This movie would have been great in 3D.
