Product Description

?This is a provocative and stimulating work of advocacy, as well as a rigorous factual summary of the consequences of Canada?s profound move to the left of the past half century, and no one concerned with Canadian public policy should be without this unique, now almost institutional, work. Even those who disagree with aspects of it will find its assemblage of little-publicized facts and array of options and prospects indispensable to the national political debate under way.? Conrad Black

?...revisits the statist, politically correct, over-regulated albatross that has being weighing on Canada?s spirit. Throw it off! Gairdner shows you how. This is an eloquent plea for liberty and independence by a keen-eyed critic who combines singing prose with a gimlet eye. Read this book! You?ll want to require every politician in Ottawa to pass a test on it before assuming office.? -Roger Kimball, editor, The New Criterion (Foundation for Cultural Review, New York)

?The Trouble with Canada opened my eyes to the decline of liberty in Canada. Now, Gairdner speaks to a new generation with a thoroughly updated version of that classic book. The struggle for freedom is never over.?-Tom Flanagan, professor of political science at the University of Calgary and former Conservative Party campaign manager

“William Gairdner’s book will have a special impact on American readers who sometimes get the impression that political economic treatises that blow down this way from up there are all written by godchildren of John Kenneth Galbraith. Mr. Gairdner sees bright and clear what Canada so greatly needs, and his mobilizing passion wonderfully animates an analytical precision that should be the reason for a national?binational?celebration.“? ?William F. Buckley

“Clear, concise and assertive?a tour d’horizon of the Canadian socio-economic landscape?medicare, bilingualism, amateur sport, multiculturism, family life and even ‘pulpit socialism’?”

?The Globe and Mail

“A powerful book and searching application of new ideas about politics and economics to the continuing Canadian conundrum.“ ?Peter Brimelow

The Trouble with Canada is a caring, comprehensive assault on our social-welfare mentality that will jolt Canadians?and help to bring the country to its senses. I recommend its author and recommend the book to all who are concerned about our future.“ ?Michael Walker

Awesome awesome awesome. This is one great read. Every true Canadian should read this book. It is such an insight into the entire scope of Canada. Written back in 1990, I only wish I read it then. It really tells the reader just what "shape" we are in. Mr. Gairdner is correct on all accounts into the events that have taken place until now. Please read his other book "The Great Divide". Ask yourself just who you are. We are losing this great country due to political erosion. In short, buy this book and educate yourself ! ! !

William Gairdner has been a keen observer of Canadian politics for a long time and understands precisely when the rot set in. Pierre E. Trudeau and his attempts to undermine the legacy left by the British encouraged him to use his position to introduce socialism into the country. As a follower of Socialism and big government control, he introduced various policies like the Official Languages Act, the Multiculturalism policy and the Charter and then gave the Courts the power to interpret these policies. All of the above have created a lot of unrest and division within the country, changing Canada from a fairly happy country to one that is full of discontent.

If you are a person who is confused about politics, societal inconsistencies and wonder why some people think one way, others a different way and really want to understand all of it clearly and logically, this book is for you.

Although a very long read, it's not boring and well worth the time spent. If you know nothing at all about politics and what it all means, what the leaders stand for, why they say the things they do, what it all means and how things happen, you'll have a very accurate understanding of "the big picture" when you're done. Gairdner's book is the only political book I've ever read that's a real page turner, every bit as exciting to read as a spy thriller! Except this isn't fiction, it's aboslute uncontestable fact. I wish learning history had been this much fun in school!

If you read this book and retain most of the knowledge within, you'll easily know more than 99% of the population about how the country works and how it should work. You'll be an expert in understanding the most important aspects of society, because it's important to note that even though the book is geared toward the goings-on in Canada, Americans and indeed all inhabitants of the world would be well advised to read this book too. So much of what Gairdner talks about is essentially universal, applying to the entire human condition rather than just a single country. The problems described and solutions to them which Gairdner provides transcend borders. Unlike most books that simply describes the problems, he provides real, workable and very logically thought out solutions.

Will the politicians who increasingly control our lives listen? That's up to you!
