I first got this movie on VHS and fell in love with the story line. When this was made, it was one of the first to show the corruption of government and big business, and why so many people view these institutions with doubt and suspicion. I have always liked Morgan Freeman but was surprised at how well he could play a bad guy. Corruption, greed and power are shown as how so many people view it today, and this is an older release. It is never going to be a classic, but Chain Reaction is a fun movie to watch and can make one take pause of hoe I w much we really know of the institutions that control our countries.

Why the hell would you name a film after a Diana Ross classic? (Or a Steps 'classic', depending what generation you're from!) OK, so it's given a rather obvious title, due to the fact the film jumps from one event to another. None of these events have any links, and are all highly unlikely and stupid to boot.
Morgan Freeman is the true star of this movie, although the constant cigar that he carries around does get a bit annoying. Especially since it's rarely lit.
Keanu Reeves seems to bulk up for certain films (Speed, Matrix), and then all the muscle turns to flab, cos he looks like he generally pigs out. He's unkempt, chubby, unshaven - basically everything you would find UNsexy in a man! And the 'relationship' between his character and Rachel Weisz's character is very unbelievable. There is absolutely no chemistry between the characters, and I believe that off screen, they didn't speak to each other. It's highly believable that they didn't spend any time together, so that results in no chemistry. Now if you were watch to Speed - loads of chemistry between Keanu & Sandra Bullock.
This film is not worth the time or the money - oops, says she who bought it! But then again, I'm a Keanu Reeves fan. If you can't stand the sight of Keanu Reeves, this film is for you to watch once, slag off every time his name gets mentioned, and instantly forget.

As one who is involved in the free energy field, and about ready to release a working technology to the world, I was delighted to see this movie. It portrays well that things are not as they seem, and that there are shadow conspiracies that at times run the show more than our own elected government does.
To someone who doesn't believe in free energy, this movie might seem contrived and corny. But I will tell you that from the perspective of one who is immersed in it, and knows of viable technologies that are about to be released, the movie does a fantastic job in its portrayal of the dynamics involved.
My critique of the movie would be of two things: the portrayal of the hydrogen reactor process, and of the scene where Reeves and Weisz get shot out of a mine shaft and then drop back down in on a cable. Any human being would have probably been killed, yet they didn't even have a broken bone or even a cut.
Their hydrogen reactor looked like something from a decades old Frankenstein movie. It seems they could have been more convincing.
They make hydrogen power look as though it will be enormously complex to extract. In reality, my hunch is that when we crack the secret it will not be that complex.
Otherwise, it was a fantastic movie.

This one starts out with bad science: essentially, there is a secret CIA project to produce endless amounts of energy by harnessing the power of a perpetual motion machine. The project is stalled because it is depending on an international group of scientists who just don't seem to have it until the least-educated person in the lab, a machinist played by Keanu Reeves, discovers a breakthrough. After it starts to work, mysterious evil forces decide that it must be destroyed, and so the lab is blown up.
Reeves' character is the type of person who thinks that problems can be solved by punching somebody out, smashing things, and running. That's how we know that he's the dumb guy around there. For some reason, a female scientist (Rachel Weisz) lets him lead her into a series of chase scenes, in which Hollywood writers yet again show that they believe that problems can be solved by means that are stupid, criminal, pointless, and ineffective. I mean, he works for her, so why is she letting him make such crazy decisions?
Morgan Freeman puts in a creditable performance, while keeping a straight face. Beyond that, the movie is notable for some very elaborate special effects - but don't view it for the plot, the characters, or the dialog, most of which is really bad. We're also supposed to believe that the FBI would interfere with a CIA operation. duh.

Eddie Kasalivich(Keanu Reeves) and the beautiful Dr. Lily Sinclair(Rachel Weisz) are on the run. Everyone is after them. The cops, the F.B.I,and some very powerful investors involved in the deadly chase. Eddie and Lily are not murderes or thieves though, they are brillant scientists, who have been apparently framed for blowing up the lab they were working in,leaving their mentor dead.
The scientists had been working on and finally discovered a new source of energy to help heat the world. After the lab is blown up Eddie is the only one left with the formula, and EVERYONE wants it! Who can they trust? They come to depend on their powerful backer of the project Shannon(Morgan Freeman). He will help bring them in, or will he?
There is lots of action, explosions, intigue, cover ups, and some really great viusal effects. Morgan Freeman does a brillant job of keeping us guessing. The cast is rounded out by Fred Ward,Kevin Dunn, and Brian Cox. It is skillfully directed by Andrew Davis(The Fugitive).
The DVD(20th Cent Fox) makes this film a pleasure to watch. It is a terrific transfer in Anamorphic widescreen. A great picture.
Audio gives you the choice of DTS, 5.1 Surround or Stereo Surround, making it compatible with most systems. All the action and explosions look and sounds GREAT!. Not to much on the extras, if thats what you're looking for though. There are some trailers, and subtitles.
Have fun with this one......Laurie.... P.S. Stay till the end of the credits!
