Single player is no longer select a character and play their story line. Now it is select a team and then any vehicle type you want (ex: Sweet Tooth's posse can drive the Axel wheel, or Outlaw's truck), but there are only 3 choices for characters and the story is so juvenile it's embarrassing.
I found the mechanics stiff and unresponsive. I had a few other people try it out just to make sure it wasn't me. All 4 of them agreed that it sucked.
I'm glad I received the code for Twisted Metal Black since that was the only good thing here. I actually traded this game in...which is something I never do. I keep every game I buy, but I did not want to keep this in my collection and I felt I should get the most from it before the inevitable price drop.
There is a review on gamefaqs that rates this game a 5/10. I recommend you read it before purchasing because I agree with most of what the review has to say.
I've played most of the Twisted Metal games, and the new one is pretty faithful. The levels are large and full of neat gimmicks and destructible scenery.
There are plenty of cars to pick from, and each one looks unique. I say each one looks unique because I felt the special weapons were somewhat bland. I blame the choice to give each car two specials; they clearly ran out of ideas.
But most importantly the game is pretty fun. You can team up with a friend and tackle the multiplayer, and to me that's what Twisted Metal was always about.
As for the campaign... I have mixed feelings.
The writing is pretty bad, which is kind of expected. I mean it's a staple that Calypso screws over each wish, but the wishes were so idiotically worded; it wasn't even a surprise how the characters got screwed over.
Also the inclusion of multi-phase boss fights was a bad idea.
No one enjoys fighting a boss that dies and gets right back up for another round. It's boring, and out of place for this game.
And finally the game includes actual races in the campaign. This is even more out of place. The computers will kamikaze your butt, just to assure the one speedy computer wins the race. These were just not fun.
So if you're a fan of the original, and really need a game, it's not bad. Not great, but you could do a lot worse.
Takes a while to get into it again but it was a great price for a brand new game.
