- Reviewed in Canada on December 21, 2018Verified PurchaseTwo Tears on the Window tells the story of Canadians, Kevin and Julia Garratt, arrested and detained in China. Much of the story is written from the perspective of the prison experience, which brings the reader into experiencing prison, and the related deprivations, constant surveillance, interrogations, and absence of any appropriate judicial process. It is a painful story to read. Yet, for those who know the story, release and freedom are anticipated. I was moved to tears when I came to the release and the reunion of the family. The story stands on its own, but given the recent detentions of Canadians in China, the book provides a window into what these new detainees may be experiencing. Hopefully not. A moving book that merits reading.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 9, 2024Verified PurchaseI haven't quite finished the book, but it's an excellent read...fascinating story and yet heartbreaking that two innocent people should be treated so cruelly, by a foreign govt. A great faith-filled story of the strength of the human spirit to overcome difficulty and injustice.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 10, 2023Verified PurchaseWithout God we can do nothing. Only through God's strength was this couple able to get through this hardship they had to endure. The baptism of suffering is something all Christians must endure. May God continue to bless this couple and their family. All glory and praise to God!
Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

Verified PurchaseAn extraordinary real life story of how the politics of a country can betray the very people who love them the most. A box of hankies is a must as Kevin and Julia expertly pull back the curtain and allow us to witness their struggles, despair, joy and resilience as God takes them both on a dramatic journey with Him. As always the nations rage, but God pulls all the strings!

J. L.Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 20195.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books I've ever read
Verified PurchaseWhat a journey of ordeal! Yet, full of humility and strength. It was their faith for God that led them to survival. I'm most touched and moved by Kevin and Julia's 775 days of terror filled prison time in China. The couple were native Canadians, they went to China after college as part of their romantic love connections and dream for humanity. After 30 years of living in China, raising their three kids and adopted one Chinese daughter from the local orphanage, and showing their love for China, and North Korea, by donation food and clothes while teaching and running their own coffee shop, they were wrongly accused as "spies" by China's Communist government, which was a cruel sinful retaliation after Canada caught a real Chinese government spy hacking into the Canadian system and causing millions of dollars damages.
Julia and Keven suffered. beginning the first minute of their "disappearance" kidnapped by the Chinese government, and for the first six months, they were kept separate from each other, not knowing if the other was dead, and forced to "confess" their "crimes. Their sufferings couldn't be compared with the terror and horror in Hitler's concentration camps. After excruciating separation, Kevin further endured the most cruel and inhumane treatment along with Chinese common criminals, in handcuffs and leg-irons that bit into flesh and clamped down on "tiger chairs," confined in one crowded jail cell room all time without fresh air, ever, ... demanded to pay for every bit of his prison food, toilet paper, soap ... (Fortunate Americans, take notes here!!!) while Julia was on house arrest, with no ID, passport confiscated, no job ... stripped right to work ... forced to report every word, every person she saw through her parole blue phone ... It was gripping ... I had more than two tears for Julia and Kevin throughout my reading ...
Besides the beautiful faith believing in God, Two Tears In the Window shows you what a dark evil system the totalitarian Communism is ... especially for those who are still naive, brainwashed thinking in rosy colors of how the evil Chinese Communist government really rules like black society and mafia behind the iron curtain -- much, much worse than Hitler and Stalin combined ...
The only thing I feel missing is this extraordinarily kind, wonderful, and beautiful couple's failure to differentiate from the ruthlessness and lawlessness of the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese culture.

Verified PurchaseI am humbled by the story of this remarkable couple and their family. I am proud of them for overcoming such tragic injustice with abounding love and hope, for each other and for their host nation.
The book is well-written and I enjoyed reading both perspectives woven together throughout each chapter. I also enjoyed the well-chosen proverbs initiating each chapter. It just goes to show how immersed the family was in their host’s culture.
I was overcome with emotion upon learning the source of the book’s title and value the lesson learned from it. I highly encourage others to read the book for that reason alone…such a wonderful but strange source of encouragement during a hugely discouraging situation!
I put off reading this book because it hit so close to home after a separate case of injustice. That said, I’m grateful everything turned out well for the Garratts. I miss Peter’s Cafe, which was my “Island of Sanity” and go-to place for a refreshing rose soda on a hot summer Dandong day. Shalom friends!
