Product Description

Color:Green

This is the classic, long-burning collapsible candle lantern that has provided warm natural light to thousands of outdoor enthusiasts for decades. It is perfectly suited to backpacking, mountaineering, snow camping and similar outdoor pursuits, as well as providing convenient emergency backup lighting. The Original Candle Lantern utilizes one UCO 9-hour candle, surrounding it in the safest, most efficient lantern housing available anywhere. The spring powered candle tube pushes the candle up as it burns, keeping the flame burning at a constant height. A viewing slot allows the user to monitor the remaining burn time of the slow-burning candle.

Have not actually used it yet, but so far these are my impressions.

One, it is sturdier built than I expected. For the size and weight I expected a less durable feeling unit that the one I received.

Two, it certainly is light and compact. Even inside the Neoprene cocoon (which I am glad I bought; the lantern comes with nothing by way of carrying pouch or anything) it will not take up much space on a shelf or in a pack.

I highly recommend the cocoon by the way. Seems a very wise investment.

Now I do have some complaints.

Since it telescopes, you have to pull the glassed section up out of the body. I found two problems with that:

It is very hard to pull hard enough to open it and not hard enough to do any damage. For example, the first time, I ended up with it almost bending as I apparently applied uneven pressure making one side open father than the other.

On top of that, the metal heat reflector/top of the glass section is attached to the housing by three tabs that penetrate the housing fully. These have sharp edges difficult to deal with due to their proximity to the housing (painted green) and scratched me quite nicely before I adjusted my grip when discovering they are sharp.

I was also not pleased to find out the base is plastic. Since this is the portion that must be twisted free to light and change the candles, I cannot help but question how long plastic locking into metal will stand up with repeated open/close.

A small thing, but a complaint none the less, is the chain attached to the hanger. I would have liked one that could be unclipped so that alternative hanging methods could more easily be used without the chain in the way.

this is very likely not safe! if you leave it on during the night (which is the original intended use of the product, the top will get insanely hot (makes sense, it's a candle after all) so you have to suspend it.
Only problem is the chain will also get insaly hot and my tent nylon loop melted, the lantern fell.

This happened while using the blue citronella candles, I do not remember if it is getting as hot with the regular ones, and there was literally no wind that night, so the hot air was not circulating.

But still one or two of the chain rings, or the hook itself should be made with another material that does not get hot.
Otherwise this is the perfect tool to make sure your tent is not humid in the morning

Kept my tent warmer, cut down on condensation, and provided a nice soft light getting ready for bed. Plus I hung my sweaty socks a bit above it and they were bone dry and nice and warm in the morning :)

I bought my first candle lantern almost 40 years ago and it is still going strong! The one I just purchased is exactly like the original and I now have a pair of lanterns for mood light on the deck and for camping. The colored lanterns are probably the same, but I just love the look of the brass. A solid, well built and durable product that does exactly what it advertises - a rarity in today's marketplace.

Some people are oddly having problems, but this lantern is beautiful in its simplicity. I hope UCO never changes this thing, or starts sacrificing quality. There are just so few things, these days, that are just simple and well-built. Please read the directions to a product before posting a negative review. I strongly suggest using the beeswax candles for tent-use. (Yes, you can hang it in your tent by the chain attached. Just be careful). The gasses produced by paraffin candles are quite poisonous.

Wonderful product the spring loaded base gradually raises the candle so that it burns at a steady rate. Could be slightly more solidly built. Can be crushed if not properly packed in your emergency kit. Overall a very good product.

Awesome lantern, I've put one through some testing and ended up buying 3 of them! (for both cars and the house). Built like a little tank and it can mean the difference between life & death in many situations, including as a part of your hiking/camping kit or a car emergency kit. The ability to keep a warming flame lit in almost any adverse conditions is gold.

I've tested this unit in a large SUV in Canadian winter temperatures (-15 C) for a couple of hours (approx. 4 in total) with the engine off and the candle actually kept an acceptable temperature inside the cab the whole time. Not comfortable by any means... but definitely survivable (as a last ditch solution). The folding small-format is a bonus too, as it will fit almost anywhere. And the lanterns all come with one 9-hour candle already installed, by the way.

Tip: Get the cocoon accessory too while you're at it. I got two of them on sale at under 10$/each. Definitely worth it, as it gives you a nice & thick protective foam layer to protect your lantern, especially the glass chimney that's most likely the weakest link of the entire unit.

the lantern keeps the candles burning for at least 8 hours. provided a nice light, not too bright, not too dim when we hung it up outside the campsite. helped warm our tent when we lit it inside the tent for a few hours before going to bed. It's not very heavy or large so I'd bring this even on backwoods trips in cold weather.
