HASH(0xa5475500) out of 5 stars Loved the book Dec 18 2009
By Suzanne Sauve - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I just loved this book. Mariama is a wonderful writer and she has done a great job with this very human story about a woman inside a polygamous situation in Sénégal. Speaks volumes to the situation of women who have to live this and it is beautifully written to boot. I highly recommend this book.

HASH(0xa2288e70) out of 5 stars Don't limit yourself to the translation!! April 21 2010
By Earthmother-from-NJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I read this book in high school for the Senior School Examination Certificate administered in Nigeria and other West African countries. This book opens one to the life of an educated African Muslim and how she contends with the deplorable behavior of her husband who hides behind "custom" and "religion" to mistreat her. Her experience unfortunately is not unique, except perhaps in the way it is presented. Madame Ba was a voice for women everywhere.
HASH(0xa0b21a2c) out of 5 stars A beautiful rendering of nowadays western Africa from the woman's point ... Nov. 3 2015

An amazingly constructed story. A tale of two ladies. Both from the same origin, both friends, but separated in their way of living. A beautiful rendering of nowadays western Africa from the woman's point of view, with the difficulties both ladies encounter, even though different difficulties. A book that is easy to read... you might even adopt one of the characters, or both of them, but you will learn. If you are not African, you will have an important taste of Africa. Enjoy!
