25 years after Eurythmics were formed in London by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart in late-1980, Eurythmics Ultimate Collection celebrates their glorious string of hit singles in the U.S. and the UK, songs that continue to resonate with their legions of fans on every continent. Clocking in with a generous 19 tracks, framed by two previously unreleased titles - the opening track and single, 'I've Got A Life' and the closing 'Was It Just Another Love Affair?'. Arista. 2005.

There are two versions of the "Greatest Hits" CD, both having with the same cover and title and both put out the same year, but they have a different tracking order. The Arista one has only 14 songs, including "The King and Queen of America", which is not on the other but was not a big hit. The BMG/RCA UK version has 18 songs, including "Miracle of Love", which is not on the other. "Miracle of Love" was a big hit.
The CD called "Ultimate Collection" (2005) is newer and more popular. It contains 19 songs and more of their later songs, which may or may not have been hits - I did not recognize them although they were decent songs. I assume more devoted fans would appreciated having those songs. "Ultimate Collection" contains all of the big hits found on the UK "Greatest Hits" CD, including "Miracle of Love".
The "Ultimate Collection" CD suffers compression added during remastering which squashes the music and makes the CD overly loud - most people won't catch that but I did a sound comparison of the two CD's on a good stereo and using Nero to see the files. In Nero, you can see the full peaks of the tracks on the UK "Greatest Hits" and so there is no compression and that is the truest sound to the original. I guess they could have raised the overall volume up on some songs, which show as quieter than others - but you can't hear the difference.Read more ›
Some less inspired songs from the 1990s have been added. This really shows a lack of interest and imagination in view of the huge treasure trove of classic album tracks. The compilers could have chosen The Last Time from Revenge, Jennifer from Sweet Dreams, Shame & Beethoven (I Love to Listen to) from Savage, When the Day Comes Down from We Too Are One and Belinda & She's Invisible Now from the obscure first album In the Garden.
But for those who never got round to Greatest Hits, it's a worthwhile purchase. Every rhythm they took, they made their own: consider the catchy calypso of Right By Your Side, grand rock ballads like Thorn In My Side and When Tomorrow Comes or the perfect pop of Love is a Stranger. Their emotional range is unique: the chilling menace of You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart makes a stark contrast to the joyful exuberance of There Must Be An Angel or the powerful affirmative Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves.
I encorage everyone to grab a copy of this CD because of the remastered classic hits. Definitely a MUST BUY!!
