Product Description

From the Back Cover

Walking into the wilderness with a pack on your back is an empowering experience―all the more so when that pack on your back isn't weighing you down. That's where this book comes in. Outdoors expert and celebrated illustrator Mike Clelland offers advanced techniques on how to pack light without sacrificing the essentials or your safety yet staying well fed and comfortable. Written in the tradition of the successful Allen & Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips, with 153 trail-tested tips full of solid advice, as well as more than 100 humorous and helpful illustrations, Ultralight Backpackin' Tips is the ultimate guide for backpackers serious about traveling ultralight. Just a few of the top ten tips expounded upon in the book:* Use a scale. * Comfortable and safe are vital! * Make your own stuff, and making it out of trash is always the best! * It's okay to be nerdy. * Try something new each and every time you go camping. * Know the difference between wants and needs.

Well I bought it and couldn't get it away from my 10 year old son for quite a few weeks. He poured over this book, inspired by the charming illustrations and he read every word over and over. Then my daughter got it. By the time I was able to read it this was one well loved book. My son insisted we go on a trip...an ultralight backpacking trip of course. So I dragged my oversized body up a small mountain, through melt water streams with a (for me light) 20 pound pack. It was only a one night trip but I haven't enjoyed myself so much for years. The light pack made a world of difference and we had a great time. My son actually taught me a great deal both before and during the trip as he devoured this book. It captured his imagination completely. Me too. Written with love for subject, charm and intelligence and illustrated wonderfully. This is how instruction books should be written. Great!!!!

Super helpful book, every single paragraph gives you some incredibly useful insight, not only on UL backpacking, but also on camping in general.
Wasn't too sure about the aphoristic structure of the book to start with, but it turns out all the paragraphs build on one another so that the book has a real intelligible flow to it overall. Changed forever the way I hike and camp!

This would be perfect first book for someone interested in long distance hiking. It reads like an entire system from feet to food. You might not agree with every tip but most are spot on. The writer also has refreshing humorous attitude that makes the book a pleasure to read.

Good info but the author repeats himself too many times, if he edited better it would make for a shorter and better book
