I've been wanting a digital SLR camera for a while and finally bought myself one as a gift. Obviously, I wanted to learn how to be a better photographer with my new toy, so I ordered a couple of books to learn more. Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure is the best I read by far. It is exactly what I wanted and needed: a clearly-written, concise and beautifully imaged book that taught me how to use my potential as a photographer. Now, I shoot only in Manual mode and know how to deliver perfect exposures everytime. If you're like me and want to go from point-and-shoot to dSLR and learn how to take advantage of what your camera can do for you, this is the book to get.

Great book. Saw this on a list of book to check out for up and coming photographers. The author is very detailed and goes in depth on each photo example he gives and even provides technical setting on the lens and camera.

There are those photographers who understand exposure and those who do not. Whatever your own level of experience with either (or both) digital or film camera, this book will, at one of the scale, teach the novice a great deal about the subject. At the other end, there will be few professional or highly competent amateur photographers who could fail to learn something from this excellent work. In short, there is something for everyone in this book and, even a brief flick through the pages, is enough to generate ideas.

I particularly like the way in which the book is laid out. A great deal of thought went into a design which allows readers to build on what has been covered so far as they progress through the work. Beginning with; Defining Exposure, the author devotes considerable time to each of the main headings which also include; Aperture, Shutter Speed, Light and penultimately; Special Techniques and Filters. Finally, there is a discussion on Film vs. Digital which might be useful for those photographers who are still not convinced by the new technology.

Speaking as a self-taught photographer whose own pictures have been widely published for over 30 years, this book has explained much that I did not previously understand as well as, perhaps, I should have.

Approx. A4 size, with one of the nicest dedications I have ever come across, there are 160 pages containing 150 colour illustrations which cover just about every spectrum of the subject. These include sport, natural history, portraits, people at work, landscapes, close up, mood shots - and a great deal more. As I said, something for just about everyone.

As a total beginner to photography I have always been overwhelmed with the amount of technical information around the subject. This book has become the most valuable purchase I have made. Great information on how to capture great pictures, I would read a few pages, go out an experiment, rinse and repeat. I can honestly say it has caused a exponential improvement in my abilities in a very short period of time. I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone who love photography or are interested in learning.

For the amateur photographer there is no better inspiration than knowing that the questions you have are at your fingertips along with a plethora of creative ideas and that's what this book provides. Highly recommended as both a motivational tool to go out and shoot as well as a good reference. And remember, the best exposure is the correct exposure!

This has to be one of the best books I have read and I would highly recommend it for any new photographer who wants to understand the entire process of picture taking. This book explains in easy to understand terms what your camera is doing the moment you press the shutter button as well as how to adjust your camera settings for better pictures.

Thanks Bryan Peterson for writing such a clear, concise photography book.
This book is a must have for a learning tool as well as a reference book.
I was "overwhelmed" with my new DSLR, this explains the thought process
one uses when thinking of the image you want to take, the results of
choosing aperture settings over shutter, the exposure triangle, rules of
photography that help you take a more "creative" exposure as opposed to
your regular everyday exposure and much more. Thanks for all your tips and techniques,
I will not be any competition but I am now "overwhelmed" by all the
knowledge you instilled in me with this great book. I also love
your book "Understanding Photography Field Guide", they are my
go to books for all things photo!

Excellent book. I've taken a few camera courses at the local college and none of the classes were as good as this book. The book is filled with concise anecdotal explanations and is packed with examples. The number of examples really helped me - it was an excellent way to learn different techniques, and best of all, I could reference them later on. There were nowhere near the number of examples presented in a classroom setting, and even with the class PowerPoint slides, I couldn't reference the specific settings used for any of the photos.
