Product Description

Piper thought she could handle the Sahar, the most powerful magical weapon in existence. She thought she could protect her loved ones and stop a war. She thought she could make a difference.

She was wrong, and her mistakes were paid for in blood.

Leaving her world — and her failures — behind, she retreats to the Underworld with Ash and the other draconians. They forge deep into long abandoned mountains, the first draconians to fly the valleys and passes in centuries — or so they thought. Until now, Ash’s mysterious heritage has been nothing but a name, but his presence does not go unnoticed. A new danger stalks him, one that may be even greater than what they escaped.

Cut off from the power she’d come to rely on and lost in a world where she doesn’t belong, Piper has never felt so hopeless. But she must find her strength, and find it quickly, before she loses Ash to an ancient power he can’t fight, before her home is devastated by the daemon war, and before her mind, body, and soul are consumed by the Sahar’s insidious magic.

I loved this series and have been waiting forever for this book to come out!!! This is one of a very small list of series and books that can capture my attention so much that I basically do an all-nighter without even realizing and then am extremely tired the next day... There is a long-awaited milestone that occurs in this finale: Piper finally comes into her own and fights her own battles, just like she desperately wanted to in the previous book (and she doesn't need the sahar for it, she can hold her own without it's corruptive power); Piper reestablishes her relationship with her ryujin family and suceeds in gaining the help of the legendary mother dragon Shinryu; Piper helps Ash so many times instead of the other way around it's really amazing (the only thing that bothers me is that neither Ash nor anyone else really acknowledges the fact that she was a turning point in so many fights and struggles. She doesn't really get her due rewards, or her day in the sun, which is too bad, but i understand why: all previous books have had a strong martyr complex in Piper's personality, and so it would be out of character and would stray from the tone of the books to have it otherwise in the last installment. While this sort of great sacrifice with no expectation of recognition or reward is appealing to me in a protagonist, I would have liked the author to make an exception for the ending.

The ending made me so depressed. There was of course some hints foreshadowing the direction that Piper would take, and even before her thoughts were revealed, I knew she could only be happy in the Overworld with her own people, or at least on Earth where people could actually use her help and she could make a real difference.

This was a great end to the series, with a fantastic end battle. Piper finally becomes the kick-ass heroine we all knew she could be and is able to stand beside Ash as an equal. And it was finally nice to see them embrace the romance between them instead of just stealing kisses and groping each other when no one else is around, which while always fun, is just not as fulfilling or satisfying.

The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is because I like a definitive happy ending dammit. It may be unrealistic, but I want to know that the main couple will spend the rest of their days together in a happily ever after that will bring tears to your eyes and make you feel kind of queasy because it was so perfectly sweet.

The actual ending of the book was much more realistic, with Piper and Ash agreeing to make their relationship work, until they are forced to go their separate ways. While this is a much more realistic ending, it just was not as satisfying because it gives the impression that someday, they will eventually have to go their separate ways, which is almost heartbreaking after wanting to see them together for so long.

My personal hang-ups on the ending aside, this was a fantastic ending to a fantastic series. It is definitely a story that I will re-read over and over again, and highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

Annette Marie has created an action-packed, gripping, emotional yet satisfying conclusion to this addictive series. Her beautiful writing pulled me into Piper’s magical world, but it is the characters and their authentic, powerful relationships that make me love this series so much.

Piper, Lyre and Ash have grown with each book, where they have travelled the journey together and now have to decide which path their lives will take and whether they will do so together.

I am saddened that this is the last book in the series. I have devoured each book and have grown to love the characters more as I read each one.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves an action-packed, superbly-written urban fantasy with sizzling romance and a kick-ass heroine.
