Situation;KISS has been very succesfull in the 70s as the decade was ending disco was `it`and they decided to make a disco record `dynasty`wich did good on charts and the single `i was made for loving you` disco fans loved it but fans of KISS`s rock n roll roots hated it.Now a new decade comes and `Unmasked`their second disco album arrives see below for my rewiew.

Thats right rock n roll icon KISS went disco a decision fans boed but think about it,just because they try something different it doesnt mean it sucks.Yeah me too i would have liked another rock album but i like this album they actually do disco pretty well,so if you are ready to accept that they try new things and actually give it a chance you might like it.

I am a die-hard KISS fan and i like their good AND bad times and i think Unmasked is a good album that deserves a listen.People might think im crazy but i like this album and for some reasons,Ace has 3 songs here and on Dynasty wich are what saved the records. But there are some bad factors such as Peter Criss departure wich caused problems to the band and strugle for the beggening of the decade.

Songs;Ace did a nice 3 songs contribution in `talk to me` `two sides of the coin` and `torpedo girl` whom are all good.I like the disco/pop ballad `Shandi` who was a big hit in Australia and song like `what makes the world go round`are good despite disco.I like the song `is that you?`Its surprising that KISS made me like like something that i didnt like originaly.

The cover/name issues; The weird comic book cover for the album is interresting, the name of the record says `unmasked` but we would have to wait another 3 years to see them unmasked for the first time.

Kiss' Unmasked was recorded in 1980. After the release of "Dynasty", Peter Criss had left the band even though he was still on the cover. Kiss began to expierence inner turmoil after the song "Beth" was released in 1976. Peter Criss's head got too big and he forgot what he really was, a drummer.
The solo albums are a good indication of a band falling apart.
Peter had told his bandmates he wanted to go solo and leave Kiss. Gene and Paul begged him not to leave and they suggested that they all do solo albums just to make him happy and keep him in the band.
When "Dynasty" was about to be recorded Peter again threw an ultimatum at Gene and Paul and said he would leave the band again if they didn't use Vinnie Poncia (Peter's solo album producer) to produce the album. Gene and Paul let Peter have his way.
Peter left the band after the "Dynasty" world tour and Kiss was left to pick up the pieces.
"Unmasked" is a very strange record for Kiss. The sound is very poppy, very radio friendly.
Some of the songs on it are good, but they just don't have that Kiss sound like "Hotter Than Hell" or "Rock and Roll Over".
I am a huge Kiss fan. I love Kiss, but when all is said and done and rock and roll history is written, "Unmasked" will not be remembered as one of their best. If you love Kiss, buy this album. If you want a good Kiss album let me suggest "Alive" or "Destroyer"

No, this is not a classic sounding Kiss album but it actually holds up nicely after 30 yrs. Outside of some of the synthesizers (yes synthesizers) the recording is really hard to date. Not their classic 70's rock and not their 80's hair-metal cheese. So I think it stands out as brief new direction and slick production in the Kiss catalog. If viewed as a one-off project, its allot of fun and a very accessible album. This could have been a template for the band moving forward into the 80's with Paul, Gene and Ace all making contributions. Ignoring the convention of the day as to what a Kiss album is supposed to sound like. Heavy, light, whatever - good songs stand the test of time. Alas, we all know what happens next....'Music from the Elder'. The official end of Kiss's great run of studio albums.

Pros:

- For the last time - strong contributions from all members - especially Ace. These guys wrote some great songs.
- Waste of space, Peter Criss, has officially been jettisoned from the group (don't let the album cover fool you)
- Very clean sounding production. A little too clean for some maybe....

Cons:

- A few too many tracks. Paul I'm talking to you. Its a fact - Kiss struggle when they exceed 10 songs.
- Synthesizers on 'She's So European'. Surely Ace, even on one of his bad days (i.e. alcohol induced coma), could have banged out a solo to replace those atrocious keyboards. I'll blame Gene by default for this.....

I must agree. This was a sign of what happened to KISS in the 80's. Kind of like Bell-Bottoms. Everybody loved it at the time. But in hindsight funny as h*ll. Now I'm a die-hard KISS fan. And I find it interesting if only due to being a die-hard FAN.
Is That You? - The opening cover song by Paul is the SHINNING Star to this disk.

Shandi - As much as I have a tendency to love Paul's sappier songs. This was a waste of tape regardless. It means well I suppose. But it's really NOTHING LIKE ANYTHING THAT SHOULD EVER BE ON A KISS ALBUM.
What Makes the World Go 'Round/Tomorrow/Easy as It Seems - Too POP but a lot better then SHANDI
Talk To Me/Torpedo Girl/Two Sides of the Coin - Ace's contributions to "Unmasked' roughly sound like throw off's his KISS Solo. Which is their saving grace.
She's So European/You're All That I Want - If you listen it has tinges of an earlier KISS Sound? Maybe just me? I think the HAPPY little Harpsichord could have been left off "European" though?
Naked City - And early sounding 'Lonely Is the Hunter' from 'Animalize'? A little softer played too close to a DISCO BALL?
You MUST be a FAN to like this Album. Listen to anything in the '70's FIRST from KISS (Even 'Dynasty') before venturing into this material. Not Truly a BAD Album. Just take it from the KISS Fan's. This is NOT THEIR BEST. I think had the Band not been in the middle of falling apart at the time. Most of this material was salvageable. And still is worth the money. If they could only get in a magic time machine and go back and kick out the keyboards and gave SHANDI to Donnie Osmond. It would have been a more rounded KISS Album in my mind anyway?
