Product Description

About the Author

About M.K. Tod I have enjoyed a passion for historical novels that began in my early teenage years immersed in the stories of Rosemary Sutcliff, Jean Plaidy and Georgette Heyer. During my twenties, armed with Mathematics and Computer Science degrees, I embarked on a career in technology and consulting continuing to read historical fiction in the tiny snippets of time available to working women with children to raise. In 2004, I moved to Hong Kong with my husband and no job. To keep busy I decided to research my grandfather’s part in the Great War. What began as an effort to understand my grandparents’ lives blossomed into a fulltime occupation as a writer. Beyond my debut novel Unravelled, I have written two other novels with WWI settings. I have an active blog——on all aspects of historical fiction including interviews with a variety of authors and others involved in this genre. Additionally, I am a book reviewer for the Historical Novel Society. I live in Toronto and I’m happily married with two adult children. I am delighted to hear from readers. Please contact me at

Format: Paperback
For someone who would read neither a war novel or a romance novel alone, the story of Unravelled had just the right amount of both fiction and non-fiction, intricately combined into something believable and, to an extent, almost personal. Most people know someone who has either had a war experience or a marriage situation, or perhaps even a marital affair. However, everyone has had an experience with true love that may have even perhaps transcended traditional boundaries, whether a faded memory of years past or something real and tangible that one still holds on to; whether innocently fantasized, or even surreally experienced. In an age where people may believe that love is defined on reality shows like The Bachelorette, real love is measured over time through years and decades perhaps by experiencing all that life has to offer or alternatively, someone who has always been held in close memory. The author delicately made us feel as though each set of affairs was not only morally acceptable given the situation, but genuine and intriguing, perhaps even enticing. M.K. Tod leveraged the romantic storyline with a strong depth of historical relevance and technical wartime knowledge, down to the discrete level that few may not even pick up-for example, when it was recalled that Anne’s grandmother saved metal scraps in her kitchen drawer as a contingency for wartime needs. The detail was impeccable, even for those not wary of its significance. I truly enjoyed the novel. Some have critiqued that the pace during the last third of the novel was slower than they would have liked, but the reality of life was reflected in this very fact. Life goes on – anything else would not have been true to form. I strongly recommend reading Unravelled, if even just to do some inner reflection of the experiences and feelings in your own life. Unravelled by M. K. Tod

Unravelled is the story of a couple Edward and Ann Jamieson and their relationship and how it is impacted by two world wars. The author delves into both husband and wife’s reactions to difficult conditions and distance war can bring to a marriage. The writer has done a lot of research and it shows with the attention to small details about the husband’s jobs in the wars and other character’s occupation’s descriptions. Reading about war is often fraught with tears for the reader, due to the carnage done in the two world wars and this book is no exception as the reader gets to experience the war through the writer’s character’s eyes. While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I felt the book could be divided into two parts. The writer could have started with Edward participating in in World War 1 and it’s aftermath on the main character afterwards and then the second book starting with World War II and how it affected the couple.
Anyone who enjoys character rich and historically accurate world war books will enjoy this novel. This manuscript shows the gritty underside of war and how it affects not only soldiers, but those left behind and how we struggle to make sense of it all, while still trying to maintain relationships in a crumbling world.

Format: Paperback
M.K. Tod has written a very enjoyable historical fiction book. Clearly she did a great deal of research of both world wars. I liked how she has worked the impact of both world wars on the relationship between Edward and Ann Jamieson. She does not use a boring chronology. She does a good job of having the reader understand the feelings of the characters individually. I liked how she described the impact on Edward of his tough decisions on sending young men and women into clear danger. A great first novel.

This is a very enjoyable work of historical fiction, which combines stories of romance with a thoroughly researched backdrop covering both world wars. The main characters are well drawn and sympathetic, but also flawed in ways that make them believable. The story moves along at a perfect pace. An excellent first novel from M.K. Tod.
