You are very lucky that you're getting these books back to back because I had to wait after the first one & it was torture! I'm going to break this review down by book but trust me you don't want to miss out on this series!
Unwritten- Trust me, when I say this book will not disappoint you. I was up, down., backwards and sideways with everything that happened. M.C. Decker created a world with characters that were realistic and likeable. There are so many pop-culture and history references throughout the first half of the book that it truly took me back in time (to the early 2000's).
Unwritten follows the story of Brooke. We first meet her while she in college working on her undergraduate degree. I fell in love with Brooke and her determination from the get-go. She knew what she wanted and she had her plan set to make that happen. When she, literally runs into Rich before the start of a class, she knows that her life is going to get complicated. Rich is arrogant, diligent and self-absorbed. He is dedicated to reaching his goals and doesn't have time for things or people that will stand in his way. However, through a course assignment, him and Brooke develop a quasi-friendship. Over time, Rich develops feelings for Brooke. However, it is not the right time in their lives for them to be together. They part ways after Rich's graduation (he is a year older than her) but don't keep in touch.
Flash forward ten years, Brooke isn't quite where she wants to be in life. After life threw her a few curve balls, she stuck around for her dad and her best friend, Cass. When opportunity came knocking, she had to take the chance; it was her dream after all. Fate has a funny way of working because just as she first met Rich, he runs right into him again. This time Rich is ready for what he's wanted for the last ten years, his shot with Brooke. He has the power to make or break her and her dreams and he uses it to his advantage. Good for Brooke for not letting him though. She was there to work and that was it. However, all Rich heard was, game on. He really pulled out the charm while still respecting her wishes. This really endeared him to me; his patience and persistence were true to his character (and though that may seem to contradict itself, it is perfectly Rich). Gah! I wanted to jump into my e-reader more than once and knock some sense into the both of them, they were so perfect for each other it they would just let it happen!
Thankfully, Cass was there to break up some of the angst with her quick wit and sense of humor. She was the perfect balance to Brooke's seriousness. And of course there was Rich to help bring back her spark. When they finally, and I mean finally, like 65% into the book, get together, I sighed with relief. Rich was absolutely perfect in the second half of the book and he remembered everything. The chemistry between them was off the charts. Of course, it couldn't end there. Just when things are looking on the up and up for Rich and Brooke...BAM! Cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers! I was not at all prepared for that at all and my heart stopped for a few seconds. I kept trying to flip for another page that wasn't there (See what I mean- lucky you don't have to wait).
After that heart stopping cliffhanger I jumped right into Unscripted This picks up a bit after the events at the end of Unwritten then travels back in time to fill in the missing gaps. The opening really pulled at my heart and had me gasping and shaking my head. The devastation and pain was palpable and my heart hurt right along with Brooke's. Thankfully, she had her best friend and the sister of her heart, Cass there to hold her hand. But Cass also gave her the kick in the pants she needed to get out of her own head at times too. In her confusion and pain she turns to someone unexpected, Jason. I was thinking to myself don't go there Brooke. But she did and it only drove home how much she loved, missed and needed Rich.
Rich, yes- mini spoiler alert- he is alive but not well. The shooting and other events that happened that day really got to him and he is not the same man Brooke fell so hard for. His downward spiral effected everyone around him. Even his best friend Blake couldn't get through to him. It took another tragedy to pull Rich from his stupor but what a turn around he made. Gone was the cold, abrasive lost man and in his place was the warm, caring and genuine man that I remembered. I was so happy to see the change in him and how he fought to win back Brooke's trust and heart. He pulled out a few big moves that had me swooning.
But in true M.C. Decker fashion, it wasn't smooth sailing for long. Aubrey, that royal piece of work is back with a new scheme up her sleeve. I love that it didn't tear them apart this time but managed to make Rich and Brooke stronger and bring them even closer together. It also put into motion another part the future that they wanted so desperately. I loved seeing this softer side of Rich and Brooke.
Overall, Unscripted was a well rounded conclusion to the tale that started with Unwritten. It was messy and beautiful all at once, just like life and love. Brooke and Rich fought hard for the happiness and future that they wanted with each other. They wrote their own story and it was a happily ever after that was perfectly them. M.C. Decker made me laugh, cry, fan myself, swoon and sigh. I sincerely hope that this isn't the last I see of them or Blake and Cass.
