HASH(0xa4931108) out of 5 stars Very good, but the Naxos releases are better Dec 16 2009

This, the second installment of Stokowski's Symphonic transcriptions of Bach's (mostly organ) works is very good indeed, but I think the Naxos volumes recorded with the excellent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Stokowski: Bach Orchestral Transcriptions, Stokowski: Bach Transcriptions, Vol. 2, are better both acoustically and in price, with comparable repertoire.

Don't get me wrong, the Chandos issue is very good, but when a direct comparison is made, even disregarding price, I still would opt for the Naxos editions. They even sound better than the Chandos SA-CD collection of several conductor's orchestral transcriptions Bach: The Conductors' Transcriptions [Hybrid SACD], despite the higher resolution and surround sound that the SA-CD format offers, which is quite a feat.

So, if you are looking for the best sounding versions of Stokowski's Bach transcriptions, listen to the excellent Naxos red book CDs.

HASH(0xa464748c) out of 5 stars Great CD and Excellent music May 27 2013

My wife and I first heard the Stokowski's transcription of "Wachet auf" (Track 4) played by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Kimmel Center this year. We were immediately taken by the melodic flow, the sound of the lush strings, and the full power and beauty of the Philadelphia Orchestra. We immediately searched on-line for the piece and was very happy to find the Chandons CD sold by Amazon. The CD does not disappoint. With my Hi-End all vacuum tubed based system, the CD comes close but not quite the live Philadelphia experience (and no stereo reproduction system can). But we thoroughly enjoyed the CD. It is one of our treasured favorites. If you have a good system, buy this disc. It won't disappoint.

Hard to beat Volume 1, and it doesn't. I'm not as in love with some of these. Enjoyable nonetheless.
