HASH(0xa68d209c) out of 5 stars Some Rather Strange Performances Dec 30 2010
By David Bower - Published on Amazon.com

This is a sampler disc featuring selections from longer works offered on other discs. I have the Vol. 1 disc which I have enjoyed several times but this one is a different story. Although some of the performances are really good, the ballet solo from Sylvia being a case in point, some of the selections are very esoteric.

I cannot really recommend this disc to anyone; the selections performed range from good to strange, the video is great but the audio has some bloated bass in a couple of selections that had me checking my speaker calibration all over again (the calibration checked out which led to me believe the bloat was on the disc).

If the selections interest you the price is low enough to minimize the risk but I'll admit it will be a long time before I put that disc on again.

HASH(0xa68d24ec) out of 5 stars Second Delightful Tease From Opus Arte June 29 2015

This is the second blu-ray offering from Opus Arte of an eclectic variety of classical performing arts presentations from opera, ballet, and the stage designed to tease and show the incredible fine definition of the blu-ray process. One or two, possibly three of these alone are worth "the price of admission", a bargain at less than $8. From the Delibes ballet "Sylvia" Darcey Bussell simply amazes with her athletic technique and rhythmic response to the music. Carlos Acosta and Marianela Nunez are beautiful in their pas de deux from "La fille mal gardee". I wonder how many of us have ever seen any Shakespeare performed in the Globe Theater, especially Romeo and Juliet, just delightful. Other operatic and ballet sequences are equally well done and provide such varied examples of what is available.
HASH(0xa68cf318) out of 5 stars An interesting collection of some great performances. I expect to investigate most of the items listed. June 7 2016

Yes - this album wets your appetite for the whole dish to be served.. So far I've done the 1.)Handel Giulio Cesare with its British soldiers and tourists. 2) Delibes Sylvia with my favorite ballerina Darcy Bussel (she also appears in British detective stories.3) La Fille mal Gardee a ballet with Dancing Chickens - Great fun! 4) Purcell the Fairy Queen - a strange presentation - I'm not sure about but I'll view it some more times. 5) Henze Ondine a fascinating and somewhat weird ballet. 6 Don Giovanni with the remarkable Simon Keenlyside having much too much fun as a reprobate. 7) Swan Lake a conventional, but beautiful ballet. Marianela Nunez is a divine dancer and so is her partner Thiago Soares with the Royal Opera House Ballet. More to come.

Good if you've just hooked up your first blu-ray player to your first HDTV and enjoy sitting there slack-jawed amazed at the video and audio for awhile, but it leaves you wanting more. Which is exactly the point, of course. If you can get this recording inexpensively, it's worthwhile.
