A young woman , viciously assaulted & left for dead, eventually wakes up in hospital with amnesia. And so begins a new life for Jane Doe. Her only friend is Jack, her doctor, who falls in love with her & upon her release from care, they marry. But Jane's happiness is short lived as Jack is murdered on their first anniversary. Heartbroken, she continues to run her book store while fending off advances from Matt, Jack's twin, who is a local cop. Then her new neighbour moves in. He's tall, handsome & very pale.
Sebastian has been watching over "Jane" since the accident. They were once in love & although she doesn't remember him, he has never forgotten her. Now that she is a widow, he's determined to win her back. But there are a few obstacles. His "maker" Elizabeth shows up. She's never understood his fascination with the pathetic little human & wants to rekindle their affair. Matt thinks of Jane as his & becomes increasingly aggressive in his pursuit of her & his suspicion of her neighbour. And Jane still gets headaches & has fainting spells when overwhelmed.
She feels a strong & immediate attraction to Sebastian. He's got a few little quirks but soon they are in a relationship and she finds happiness again.
The police never found Jack's killer. When Jane is assaulted again, they catch her attacker who resembles the description given of Jack's assailant. If it's the same guy, why did he come back for Jane?
This is a short, easy read about two people reconnecting against the odds. The prose is clean & simple and while it is a paranormal, it's also heavy on romance. But it will require you to completely suspend your disbelief. There are events such as Jane's quick acceptance of what Sebastian is & her fight with Elizabeth that quite frankly are hard to swallow but hey, this is fantasy. The book is jam packed with elements that move at warp speed for the first 3/4 while the last chapters are oddly dragged out so the pacing is a little off.
You'll figure out who the "bad guy" is before he's revealed but that's ok. It's not really what the story is about. The suspense serves as a side dish to the main course of paranormal romance. And I have to say it contains one of the best proposals I've ever read. Sigh....
So you get a romantic little read with drama, mystery, danger & steamy sex with a vampire. Not a bad package.
