This is a great book for both emerging women leaders as well as senior women in leadership positions as it offers real life examples that can be applied to a wide range of difficult situations that women face in their professional lives. I highly recommend this book as it gives you practical solutions that women can use that would make our feminine qualities an asset and not something that we should try to hide when we are placed into leadership positions!

The Velvet Hammer: Powerful Leadership Lessons For Woman Who Don't Golf by international speaker and leader/management expert Elaine Allison clearly lays out for women just how they can be effective with leadership and management responsibilities in the corporate world. Readers will learn what brains, hormones and cultural expectations have to do with being a woman of supervisory responsibilities; how to handle professional jealousy and overseeing the work of friends; gaining the respect of more knowledgeable and experienced superiors or subordinates; handling discipline and mediating conflict; setting effective goals for work teams, and so much more. The Velvet Hammer should be considered "must reading" for any woman faced with supervisory or management responsibilities in a business setting.

HASH(0xa0f6e654) out of 5 stars a valuable, affordable resource April 23 2007

Where was this book when I became an Executive at age 26? The "Velvet Hammer: PowerHerful Leadership Lessons for Women Who Don't Golf" is the debut book for Elaine Allison. The author's approach is a straightforward approach where she uses real-life examples to get her point across. She addresses the one concept that is so often not discussed in management courses or training, the differences between men and women.

Allison begins the book by talking about two types of people, the ones who believe in continuous learning and everyone else. This book is directed toward the people who believe in continuous learning who are interested in a leadership role. She describes this person as having: a willingness to take charge, knowledge in your industry, field or organization, knowledge of effective leadership and support from a mentor or a sponsor.

I really like the author's approach to the book. She used her real-life experience starting as being one of the first female prison guards in one of Canada's all-male maximum security prisons. From there she has held various management positions and is now teaching people management skills. She outlines her techniques throughout the book with 25 Velvet Hammer techniques. This commonsense, easy-to-implement approach includes: setting expectations upfront, not getting angry at gender differences - learning to embrace them, celebrating your inherent female traits and utilizing them to their fullest where they aid you, understanding your style and knowing in what arenas it works, setting ground rules and gaining support upfront, tapping into existing expertise and knowledge and teaching and training upfront to name just a few. Another very useful tool included in the book by Allison is exercise and inventory sheets. They can either be copied from the book or downloaded from her website. You can go to the website without using the book, but these are only really effective if you read the in-depth information about them in the book.

Overall, I found "The Velvet Hammer" to be a valuable, affordable resource for a person thinking about a management position, new to management or who wants to hone their management skills.

HASH(0xa0f6e924) out of 5 stars Elaine NAILS it with her insights on women in business Feb. 2 2010
By Mary Charleson - Published on
Format: Paperback
Elaine nails it with the Velvet Hammer when making observations and insights about women in business, how we respond differently, and most importantly how to navigate the waters where the tide has been running with the guys for some time. Based largely on personal experience and research, this book clearly lays out a simple but well research approach for women who are new to management and want to establish themselves as credible while not loosing that feminine touch. As an observer and researcher on marketing to women, I found her chapter on 'celebrating the differences' particularly insightful. Rather than becoming one of those books that waits patiently on your bedside table for attention, this book is easy to get into and brief enough to finish without too much effort.
HASH(0xa0f6ed5c) out of 5 stars A great book for women in leadership roles or anyone who wants to communicate more effectively... March 8 2015

Elaine wrote this book from her experience as a female leader who is smart, observant, and intuitive. In her book, I learned about my personality style. Elaine has showed the readers how to recognize other people’s styles and it’s very helpful that Elaine has also showed us the ways to adapt and work better (and smarter) with opposite personality styles. This is a must read book for women in leadership roles or anyone who wants to communicate more effectively and work better with people of the opposite sex.

One of the people I supervise started calling me "The Velvet Hammer". Unsure where it came from, I checked the internet and came across this leadership book and ordered it. It is a great book. The person I supervise later told me that he did not even know there was a book out there with the title! LOL.
