Product description

From Publishers Weekly

Hague's warm paintings give a soft sheen to Williams's classic story. Ages 5-10. (May)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Fancher's adaptation of Margery Williams's classic story sings with the magic of the original, while offering a shorter, more accessible version for modern children. The oil paintings have a luminous quality, the rich colors playing with dark and light to produce a timeless feel, perfectly complementing the text. The details of the boy's room, his toys, his Nana-all exist in an enchanted place somewhere between the past and the present. At last librarians have something to give parents who want to share the story of the toy that became real with their children, but are dismayed to find the original tale longer than they had remembered. An ideal adaptation of an old favorite.

Childhood favorite. Best illustrations out of all the editions
Great book. Same edition I used to have as a kid in the 90's. I think the illustrations in this edition are the best ones, as the style of drawings different from year to year. The attention to detail of the rabbit's square, stuffed feet was always my favorite.

I heard that this book was terrific so I was sad that I hadn't read it to my daughter when she was young, but I bought it anyways as something for future grandchildren (fingers crossed). When I received this book I didn't realize how beautiful it would be and thought it would make a terrific gift for a colleague of mine. I'm actually thinking of gifting this one and getting a cheaper one for myself.

I'm not a cat person nor a dog person. But, I love my plush. I would take it everywhere and sleep with it and has protected me from nightmares. This story isn't just for kids. If you still carry the heart of child in a little jar you will enjoy this book like I have.

I liked that this highlighted the importance of things or “people” you love rather than the whiz-bang of the latest shiny object plus that sometimes we just need to hang in there and have faith in the human we love despite feeling ignored

This is "Toy Story" before "Toy Story." This is the story of the secret lives of toys holed up in the bedroom of a boy who receives a stuffed bunny for Christmas. And what is it that the toys want most? Why, to be loved by the boy, of course, just like in "Toy Story." However, unlike "Toy Story," there is another desire--a need even more important but that is reserved for only the most beloved of toys: the gift of becoming real. Charming, elegant, heart-warming. A toy whale of a toy tale.

This is truly a timeless classic when it comes to children's books. I love that this hardcover copy has the same image on the sleeve as it does on the physical cover. It also includes the original artwork on the interior pages which adds to the nostalgia. There is a lot of wisdom in this little story, and I would highly recommend it be read to every child.
