It barely cracked the brick, so i pushed harder on the drill until CRACK - the entire bit broke off. I got lucky I didn't get jammed with it - that would've been another story I'm sure! I looked on Amazon (where 99% of our shopping, besides food, is done) and saw a few expensive bits and/or bit sets.. until I came across this one from Vermont American. It was the exact site that I needed for the flag, and it was just over $2. It must be a new product since it was one of those "add-on" items, so I added a couple more things to increase the price of my cart to $25 (I can always find something to buy on Amazon!).
It came in last week, always on time shipping from Amazon, but I didn't get to use it until today. With the drill in my hand and this puppy locked-n-loaded, within 1 minute I was able to drill both pilot holes into my brick mailbox. Just a little push to make sure it went in all the way through, and that was that.
Now I don't have to chase the USPS guy to give him my mail... (yes I've gotten in the car to chase him down and the first few times & he looked scared as heck!)
But these are serviceable - with one of these bits I drilled about 50-60 holes about 2 1/2" deep. I've even had success with limited sharpening afterward, being careful to not 'take too much off the sides', as it reduces hole diameter, ...naturally.
