If it wasn't for a social media platform - LinkedIn - I would never have discovered this book. I occasionally listen to Spark, the CBC radio show, hosted by the author, but only with half an ear. Apart from her low seductive voice, I didn't know a thing about Nora Young, let alone that she was a visionary. I didn't know how old she was, what she looked like, where she came from, whaI her background was - nada. Now, thanks to my "digital profile," she is on the verge of becoming my BFFL. (She may even check out MY cult classic, Christmas Eve Can Kill You, available on Amazon at a ridiculously low price.)

No, I haven't purchased The Virtual Self; I've merely "sampled" it. Still, i'm very impressed with Ms. Young's vision, it appears that she is the successor to Marshall McLuhan and Bucky Fuller. She not only shares their insight but their virtually impenetrable prose style. This is the type of book that you have to read one sentence at a time. Then pause to figure out what it means. Often this requires reading it again. But it's worth it because what the author has to impart is semi-profound.

At least that's the way it appears from the Introduction to Ms. Young's magnum opus. If I ever get around to reading it I suppose I'll find out. Then I may have to revise this review and, possibly, change the "star" rating. I hope the latter won't be necessary. Especially since Nora Young and I may be best buds by then. I just sent her my LinkedIn "response" a few minutes ago. Stay tuned...

Ever insightful and consistently entertaining, this book captures our imagination at a steady pace. It's a carefully woven tale about personal experience, at the same time as remarkable as an integrated circuit - all the while being as matter of fact as the paper its printed on. The observations are astute in their clarity, and impart subtle lessons from a contemporary yogic voice.
