I'm very happy with the selection of hats to knit in this book. There's a brief history of knitted hats comparing then and now versions. Next is covered the anatomy of a hat from bands to cuffs to visors and earflaps. There is a two page layout showing 14 drawings of the types of hats. This I found really helpful because they all have proper names, i.e., beret, cloche, bucket, watch cap, etc. Most of the styles are popular today. Techniques of construction are covered and then we get to the patterns. There are 50 of them so there's lots to choose from. Of course there are repeats of the styles. For instance there are many beret hats but they are all different - one of then being the cover photo. I really like the majority of them and plan to make many of them. Some favourites are a gray felted bowler with a red band, The English rose Fair Isle ivy toque is gorgeous made with blues purple and green. There's a really nice gray hood that extends so that it has a scarf - a classy look done in moss stitch. The Diamand cable aviator hat is done in white - it's lovely complete with earflaps (a must for cold Canadian winters). There are many beanie hats that are really lovely. And there's a stunning brioche slouch hat. The stitches used are vines, Fair Isle, cable, etc., etc. There's even a couple hats with applique. I think everyone is bound to find a several hats in this book that they will want to make. Happy knitting.

It took me a while to choose what hat to knit, and knitting itself was so easy. Easy knit hats, classic and at the same time so today patterns. There is something for everybody. My next hat is for my Grandmother and she is 90 ;)

This is a good, solid design book.

Too often, publishers will print knitting books that rely too heavily on specific yarns as crutches for simple or flawed designs. But these designs are immaculate. This book provides the knitter with basic instructions that can be modified for different yarns (as long as the yarn is the same weight), which is great for hats, because let's be honest - who doesn't have that one skein left over from a fancy shrug? The publishers have even printed the standard yarn weight info chart into the back of the book for easy reference. Unfortunately, the patterns don't offer adaptations for yarns of different weights. In something that strives to be a reference book, that's just lazy.

To its credit, the book demonstrates how the basic design can be adapted and embellished, so those with a more creative or experimental bent might have an outlet for their yarn artistry.

Finally, I love the big full-page pictures. It allows the knitter to see both fit and pattern in detail.

There are two reasons why I gave this a 3-star instead of a 5-star rating:

1. It's in hardcover, and not spiral bound. It's clunky and impractical. Knitting books rarely double as coffee-table books.

2. I would have liked to see more options for different yarn weights, especially for the fitted hats. Seriously, get on board with this, Vogue Knitting. Most knitters are not going to be buying some fancy yarn just for one hat. They're going to go to their stash. Every single one of these pieces could be substituted with half a dozen different types of yarn. Demonstrate how that can work.

I first saw this book in the local library and decided I would buy it for myself because there are a good assortment of styles of hats. Some look to be more challenging than others but I intend to work my way through all of them.

Lots of variety. I would recommend this to knitters who have some experience, and want to make hats for different occasions (and locations). No baby hats here. Patterns for a range of head sizes. A good book to have in your knitting library. Would have liked to maybe see more patterns written for a couple of sizes, but with the # of patterns that's not a really big deal.

Mistake free - beautiful photos. Clear concise patterns.
I've already made half the hats in this book and highly recommend it to intermediate to advance knitters.

There are so many beautiful hats, can't deside which one to make. The designs are not the everyday ones you see
