The young Police officer protagonist, not having lost his idealism for a socialist state, is confronted with the daily dose of incompetence not only by his superiors, but also by his own father. Who used to be his enthusiastic mentor. It seems he's is sacrificing his family life, to apologize for the corruption of his leaders.
An intellectual once, married to a beautiful Cabaret singer. More and more, is he not only to betray his own ideals, but also covering for the many faults and mistakes of the political system. He goes so far, informing on his sons girlfriend, who once had planes to escape to West Germany, with an American Boyfriend, but decided for her new love interest, a handsome Vopo: Volkspolizist(East German Policeman), to stay. The relationship is volatile at best, constant tensions with the "socialist realism" creates regret. It doesn't help that the young Vopo is pressured by his father to end the flirt with the "Staatsfeind" (enemy of the state) girlfriend. Worrying that this relationship might be harmful to the family's courier. In turn this behavior of the father, is not condoned by his wife, the cabaret singer, who feels alienated. She no longer regognizes the man she once loved. A tragedy in the making ....with unexpected twist and turns, will engage the viewer with many gut wrenching emotions. A story that will stick with you. This movie is not concluded, and there is a second part released soon, I'm sure gonna watch. There is nothing like it, that could compare to the quality of this drama, but the other great movies about the former GDR: Goodbye Lenin, The Tower,Der Rote Kakadu,Eine Liebe in Koenigsberg, Broddi, and The Lives of Others.
