1) You'll find that the "Radial Menu" will save you hours of time. What I mean is, I use to have to press "Ctrl plus Shift plus /" to open ONE menu (i.e Color Balance, Shadows Highlights, and other Adjustment / Filter menus). With the Radial Menu, you can setup 6 Adjustment / Filter menus. This save me a lot of time using this short cut.
2) Size. I thought the Medium Wacom would be better (bigger is always better, right?). But if you just use small, hand movements, then you don't need the huge surface area. Maybe if you're working on art work, and you like moving your arm and hand around a lot, a bigger surface would be better. For if you're just fixing photos, and don't use a lot hand movements, the Small is perfect.
3) Portability. I like the fact that I can put the tablet in with my laptop when travellling. Also, if you have a small office and need the space, the Small Wacom won't clutter your work area.
Cons:
1) Learning curve. The only time I ever use a pen is when signing Xmas cards my wife forces me to sign. So, when using the pen, I was a bit shaky. But it took me about 2 days to get the hand of it. Also, I'd recommend watching their youtube vid on how to properly use the pen.
That's it! Again, if you're a pro who uses photoshop or does a lot of work editing photos, the Small Wacom is good enough. And the ability to access all the features (Adjustments Filters) in one click from your pen is a huge time saver.
Thanks!
Totally worth to get the pro version.
I was wondering at first if I wanted to bamboo one, but the fact that the small version is the same size of the large version of the bamboo and that the prices are similar, I went with the small version.
It's very large, and for someone who doesn't have a lot of space to work, it's perfect!
HARDWARE - Its a beautiful piece of hardware and well built at that. It feels real high quality too and that's a good thing considering you are paying over $200 for it.
Don't think wacom has any rivals when it comes to hardware like touch tablets. The stylus feels weighted and great in the hand. The touch surface is real responsive and sensitive. No complaints there. Lot of controls both on the pad and the stylus. The two ends of the stylus can be used for different brushes (eraser/brush). Scroll wheel on the pad is useful too. The hardware in one word is awesome!
SOFTWARE - A lot of the cost is made up when you consider the amount of software that comes along with this. PS Elements alone usually sells for ~$100. And there is a lot more in there. Its the best bundle I have seen so far.
IN COMPARISON to other tablets - If you are considering between the intuos and the bamboo : Go for the intuos. The intuos small is only slightly smaller than the large bamboo but packs a lot more controls on the side and comes with way more software too. The price is only around $20 more for the intuos small compared to a large bamboo.
Other than another WACOM, there is no comparison to this tablet in hardware or software offerings at that price point.
CONS -
PRICE - Its not exactly would one would call cheap for a peripheral. It would have been 5 stars if it was around the $150 or lower mark. But IMO even at over $200 its not really expensive considering the hardware and software you get.
HARDWARE - The tablet also has a lot of unused surface area which could have made the device slightly smaller. There is no clear border that you can feel and only the corners are lit reminding you of the size of the touch area. It doesn't matter when you use stylus and set it to scale the surface are to the screen area. But when you are using it as a regular touch pad you will find yourself going out of the touch area. Its quite a thick band that looks exactly like the touch sensitive area.
Secondly the USB port on the device is hidden deep within a cavity. I don't see the point in that.
FINALLY -
I would recommend this to anyone who is not in need for a large surface to work with. Its not small really but its not exceptionally large either. There is enough room to rest your palm on the surface and work with your stylus. I like it as it fits on my desk leaving ample room for all the mess that I have on my table.
It has a lovely smooth touch surface. With nice controls etc...
Unfortunately I have Cats. The surface doesn't seem like something I want in their environment. The thought of them on the desk and their nails on the surface made put the Intuos away and continue with the Graphire where everything is under hard plastic.
I could not get the drivers to play well together. My Windows 7 machine would lose the Intuos if I plug it in for graphics sessions.
I don't know that this is a defect. I'd definitely not recommend this for industrial settings or harsh spaces.
