A Compelling Collection

R. S. Carlson has been called one of the best of our Vietnam war era poets, but this volume demonstrates his powerful work with family issues when the concern is with alzheimer's and dying. The range of concerns and of tones expressed here is especially compelling and deepened by two cycles of poems concerned with the slow loss of the poet's mother to alzheimer's, and the poems concerned with the regular checkups for a young woman with cancer--until she finally succumbs. These are poems filled with many shifts in emotion. Highly recommended reading.
