This gem of a book is a fluid and precise narrative that brings the daily lives of the author's ancestors, the last keepers of the light on Pomquet Island, Nova Scotia, into vivid and poignant focus. The reader is drawn in from the beginning to the joys and sorrows of a hard-working family that holds its own members, its animals and even its distant neighbours strongly within its orbit. The unfolding of days (and ultimately, a lifetime) on an island that can be both bleak and beautiful is magical, anchored by the words of George Millar himself as they are reproduced from his journal. A lovely read!
