The people with severe periodontal disease for whom I also do non-surgical periodontal therapy and chose NOT to buy a waterpik, usually get around 50-70% resolution in their mouths initially. And a few months later when I see them again, down to 30-50% resolution and by the end of the year, they're back to where they started from. I usually tell my patients, if we do this deep cleaning (which costs close to $1000 if you're paying out of pocket) and chose not to buy a waterpik, you're really wasting your time and money.
If I can say one thing to anybody suffering from bad gingival health, do yourself the greatest favour you can, and buy a waterpik.
For the people having problems with them being too messy, my advice is to bend over the sink when you're using it, DO NOT try to look in the mirror to see what you're doing, otherwise you'll get everything wet. Once you're bent over the sink, keep your mouth as closed as you can (while still allowing the water to come out) and go by feel! You should simply move the tip along the gumline and stop 1-2 seconds between the teeth to flush those areas out.
If you can't feel where you are, turn up the power! The rule of thumb is to go with the highest power you can before it starts to hurt, but don't go past 8-9. As your gums heal, you should be able to keep bringing the power up.
For the people that are having problems with the waterpik dripping out from the bottom of the water tank once they've filled it, simply push the little black rubber piece at the bottom of the tank down with your finger BEFORE filling it up with water. That way you won't get the dripping.
For the people trying to decide whether to buy the 660 Aquarius model or the older 100 Ultra model, they do the same work but the newer Aquarius model is easier to use since the older model has a "pause" button on the handle that you have to press down pretty hard before turning on the power, otherwise the waterpik will squirt water everywhere. The Aquarius has an "on and off" button on the handle which makes it easier to use. If you have kids, DO NOT buy the older Ultra model as it will be much more difficult for them to use and they will make a huge mess everywhere!
Disclaimer: I do NOT work for the company that makes waterpiks, I am a registered dental hygienist that really believes in this item, since it's made my work exponentially easier with patients that have severe periodontal disease. Also, if you have severe periodontal disease, simply using this instrument without a deep scaling will NOT give you gingival health. You will have to see a qualified dental hygienist so they can scale deep under your gums and remove the hard CALCIFIED tartar/calculus off your teeth first! No waterpik, electric toothbrush, rinsing etc will help you if you don't! Once the hard tartar is removed, then you can start to flush the deep pockets left behind daily and you will see gums become healthy.
If anyone has any questions, please ask and I'll be happy to answer!
I'm a huge popcorn fan, and I haven't had to suffer from the dreaded shell under the gum recovery since!
First night of use this machine took out a plaque the size of rice grain and few other smaller ones at the lowest setting using the Classic Jet tip.
I am very impressed with this machine, did I tell you it removed a plaque the size of the rice grain from my mouth?
I can now feel the empty space in which the plaque use to reside in my mouth when moving my tongue around that area, this machine really works in not only removing plaque but also removing other small food particles and stains tucked away deep in between the teeth and gums; it's kinda gross but I really enjoy seeing small particles of residue in the water every time I have to spit out a mouthful when using this machine.
