Excellent film. Provides a great historical perspective on surfing in general, with specific discussion of Ireland, Hawaii, and California with quite a bit of Ireland in the current context. Beautiful waves, great shots. Really interesting, intelligent, and inspiring characters talking about their experiences and a sport/lifestyle they obviously love. Never a boring moment.

HASH(0x9b3f16fc) out of 5 stars The Best Surfing Film Ever!!! Jan. 19 2010
By David Stone - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
I watched this recently at a film festival and thought it was the most fascinating surfing film I have ever seen. As an avid surfer it was very interesting to learn about George Freeth "the father of modern surfing" and his Irish background. Easily deserves to take its place next to Billabong Odyssey. One of these days the largest wave is for sure going to be ridden in Ireland and I hope to be there. Kelly Slater is amazing in this film as our the Malloy brothers. I am ordering my copy now.

I love anything that has to do with the ocean and surfing. This documentary WAVERIDERS turned out to be very, very good and gives a an hour long background into the roots of surfing in Ireland and it's impact on a modern day way of life. Of particular interest was the story of a man named George Freeth who came to America, the 'father' of modern day lifeguarding and the inventor of the torpedo buoy who honed his skills to include minimizing loss of life by adopting skills that would be initiated and implemented by the newly trained 'lifeguards' of Redondo Beach. This man also is known for spearheading the sport of water polo and receiving a Congressional medal of honor before succumbing to spanish flu at the age of 35. An unexpected surprise was to see that occasionally, Ireland has GIANT waves and the footage is fantastic of the surfers dropping in on a few of those "icy hollow slabs" with exquisite finesse!

Very enjoyable video for all those who love the surf and the sea!

Who knew that Ireland, of all places, was the motherland of surfing? Fantastic, jaw-dropping surfing footage given interesting historical context.
