Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

First-time author and artist Cain treads familiar ground here with a picture book that pales in comparison to Jamie Lee Curtis's subtler and snappier Today I Feel Silly. From scared to shy, bored to jealous, Cain covers the emotional waterfront in a series of rhymes paired with pastel pencil drawings featuring elflike children. The opening spread, "silly" ("Silly is the way I feel when I make a funny face/ and wear a goofy, poofy hat that takes up lots of space"), casts a child in a rainbow-colored clown outfit against a sunny yellow backdrop and heralds the book's main artistic conceitAa palette picked to suit each mood. "Bored," for instance, is played out on a background of drab tans and browns, while "angry" steams with fiery reds and purples. Though energetic and bright, the cartoonlike illustrations skate close to being strident, while the verses are pedestrian ("Sometimes I feel so very sad and really don't know why./ Instead of playing and having fun, I cry and cry and cry"). Ages 4-8. (Nov.)

I like the message and the illustrations, but the text is so small and in a weird font. So not only will your early readers have difficulty trying to read, but it will be difficult for you to read to them if you're holding the book out for everyone to see. No, I don't have vision problems.

My son instantly loved the book! He understood most of the adjectives for emotions. "frustrated", "jealous", and "bored" were not as easily understood. Well, I guess he'll get it as he gets older. He's only three now. However, "happy", "sad", "silly", and "scared" he understood very well.

I collect children's books and I usually buy them if they have artwork that I fall in love with. I definitely fell in love with the artwork in this book. It's so vibrant and fun! Then when I read it, I discovered how valuable this book could be for parents and teachers. Children need to learn that it is ok for them to have different emotions, and this book explores plenty of them. I have to admit, the day I bought this book, the "disappointed" page fit me perfectly...the same scenario and all. I just couldn't resist it. It's just a wonderful book!

My first grade students love this book! I read this book the first week of school while talking about emotions and how we shared them at school. The art work is fun, colorful and just plain wonderful! My students have loved this book so much that my copy is dog-eared.

We purchased this book for our 4 year old son. While it wasn't one of his favorites, it has become a favorite of his now 22 month old sister. It provides a great opportunity to talk about feelings, and what to do when you are feeling a certain way. The illustrations are also fun and brightly colored, which my daughter loves. Great book on feelings...

This book on feelings is a one in a million. It is attuned with my 3-year old by using age-appropriate language and non-threatening images to represent her feelings. It doesn't overdo it in a way that adults sometimes think is needed to express an emotion, thereby scaring the child off. And it's fun. Right on target.

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book! She also tries to use the feelings described in the book in context during play (she sat down with a pout the other day and said she was "boring"). It has really helped to give her the words to describe how she is feeling or just helps her understand these more complex concepts.

The beautiful illustrations are tons of fun & the words are wonderful! I brought this book for my 5 yr old who we adopted and 3 1/2 and has all sort of feelings he usually acts out on. The book gave us a way to discuss recognizing and articulating feelings, and how to deal with them in an appropriate ways.
