During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of true emotion." From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success. --Gail Hudson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book is one of my favorites and I highly recomend it as a first read if you are new to the spiritual scene.
It goes hand in hand with so many other "non preachy" spiritual books and it doesnt sound like a grandmother preaching the bible.
If you liked - Celestine Prophecy, Power of Now, Life & Teaching of the Masters of the Far East, anything written by Krishnamurti, The Spiritual Tourist, Sanctuary - Path to Consciousness, Carl Jung, Deepak Chopra..... just to name a few. or... if you read this book I suggest reading any of the above as each book is connected to the other and will point you to the next step on your path.
I am a true "Spiritual Seeker" who wants answers to the many questions that haunt us all and have led us to the spiritual relm. I owe it all to this book as it was the first spiritual type book I read and it became the First Step on the Path to my awakening and it gave me the drive to continue to seek and become more conscious of what is.
I have no idea what my life would be like if I did not read this book. I would probably still be an MTV drone like most people out there who is only concerned with themselves and creating a fake image that we like to think makes us a superstar, which I now realize is as far from reality as it gets. If the whole of society would only wake up!!!!
The book is such an easy read with such an impact..Read more ›
Steven Lane Taylor, author of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide for Living Life in the Divine Flow."
The book has equal merit when viewed either as a work of fiction, or as a biographical sketch. I believe that the mystical Socrates in the book is in fact Dan's higher self, urging him to reach farther and deeper than his "stated" abilities lead him to believe.
The book should not be taken literally. I believe its main purpose is to hint at an existence beyond the mere mechanistic. I also get a sense of parallel universes with the girl Joy who initially represents the more enlightened/advanced student in his class-of-one, and later becomes part of his life - while being the same person in some multi-dimensional sense, she is temporally not the same person at all !
Some very good pointers about breathing techniques and diet in this book. Other than that, I believe the whole book is metaphorical. A very good read if you're in the "whats the meaning of life?" stage. It won't give any answers, but it helps you ask the right questions. -:)
