Not normally a big fan of movies with sports as a central theme, but I've always been interested in historical films and in the Marshall football team disaster of 1970. A lot of films of this genre are based on true events, and I think that We Are Marshall is an above average portrayal of the events that took place. Very interesting to see the effect the plane crash had not only on the school and the families of the victims, but also on the entire town.
Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox are really good in their roles, the script is nice and tight - an all around good job in my opinion. I've watched this 3 or 4 times now and find something new each time. Good movie.

An emotional and inspirational movie the ebpnture family must see. Based on a true story and the rebuilding of a football program after a fatal airplabpne crash, the actors did this tragedy justice despite the emotional trauma the community had to endure.

"We are Marshall" is the true story of what happened when a chartered plane crashed just short of the airport in Huntington, West Virginia on November 14, 1970, wiping out the varsity football team for Marshall University. Having to replace virtually the entire team and coaching staff, university President Donald Dedmon (David Strathairn) hires Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey), who is not a Marshall alum, but who thinks that he can help a team, school, and community devastated by the tragedy. The story ends a year later, when the Thundering Herd play their first home game of the season. While watching this true story play out it might occur to you that this inspirational story reaches its climax when Marshall played in its first game under Lengyel the week before, because just fielding a team again is a major achievement, but "We Are Marshall" stays faithful to the genre it represents and represents well.

In many ways the most emotional part of the movie is the opening half-hour, that starts with the end of the final football game at East Carolina and plays out the rest of that fateful Saturday. In depicting the plane crash, the film's director McG gives us bits and pieces of the moment of realization for those who will be touched by this disaster as the news breaks. Wide shots of the forest on fire contrast with the downpour in which a wife learns that her husband was not on the plane. Inspirational movies of this sort are intended to provoke strong emotions if not tears, but rarely is the first act as emotionally powerful as it is in this 2006 film. The plane crash was not some place far, far away, but on the outskirts of town.

this is a pretty terrific movie.the acting is great there's tons of
action, and there are even a few touches of lite humour.the movie is
also very touching,and heartrending,especially near the beginning.it's
hard to watch without becoming emotional since the movie is so
intense.it's a true story about hope and faith and battling against the
odds.but it doesn't hit you over the head with sentimentality,at least
i didn't think so.there were probably some dramatic liberties taken to
make the story more appealing for the contemporary audience, but i'm
sure the gist of the story is accurate and intact.the only minor
negative things i can say about this movie is that i felt it was too
long and a bit slow at times.it can also be quite depressing, though
that's too be expected due to the subject matter.still you prepare
yourself for that.otherwise this is a movie well worth watching.i give
We Are Marshall a strong 4.2/5

this is a good movie. The actors are all very good; Mathew M. is extremely versatile as an actor and very believable in this role. The movie was good in that it seemed to depict the events fairly closely; the follow-up at the end clearly indicated that the program and events were truly a part of (painful) history for the various people associated with Marshall University. Good movie - didn't even need too much Kleenex to be able to watch.

Great movie about a very tragic true story that turns out pretty good all things considered. McConaughey does a great job.
