Wemo released a firmware update recently that has completely solved my issues. Have had no connectivity problems since and they now work flawlessly. Faith restored in the company.
After Purchasing and setting up google home in my house, the next steps towards creating a more fluid smart home, was replacing some of my older smart switches with ones that were compatible with google. I researched a few names and settled on Wemo as they had good reviews and Belkin was a trusted name. Once they arrived I set them up. Installation was quick and easy and they flawlessly connected with my google home. Within minutes I was able to turn the switches on and off using voice commands and all seemed well. However I’ve since ran into an issue. For some reason every now and then the wemo plugs would loose connection with both the google home and the wemo app. Sometimes manually switching them on or off would solve the problem, other times I needed to restart them. After this happened repeatedly, I decided to factory reset the switches and install them again. This seemed to work, and all seemed well for awhile. Then, after about a week they started randomly disconnecting again. This time however they would randomly disconnect from the wemo app and google home becoming unresponsive for a minute or 2 than suddenly start working again. Needless to say it was rather annoying and more than once I found myself yelling like an imbecile at my google home trying to turn off the switches.
I can’t 100% confirm that it’s a problem with the Wemo products and not my network, but I’m not having the issue with any other smart home products, and the previous switches never had this issue as well, which doesn’t leave many other options besides a problem with the Wemo switches themselves.
For now I’ll keep trouble-shooting and repost if I discover the culprit or a solution. In the meantime I’m hesitant to recommend these switches and slightly disappointed with a product name that is usually synonymous with quality items.
The set-up process for these is poor, as it's rather complicated and confusing. Belkin did not approach these through the lens of the customer and it shows. I was only able to get 1 of my 3 wemo plugs to connect properly during the set-up process, with the others consistently crashing. I sought support via Belkin's Wemo forum but was greeted only by frustrated customers with unresolved issues. Their engineering team posts in the forum but does not make any attempt to troubleshoot, instead posting generic responses asking customers to send them an email.
The app is absolutely brutal as well. Do not buy this. If you are in the market for a smart plug try another like TP-Link.
Promptly returning them. Don't waste your time. The products packaging was great and the look of the product was great. Right up until it didn't work at all.
