I broke my wrist years ago and I am unable to use a manual can opener. We have purchased many name brand electric can openers in the past. Most fell apart in one way or the other, so to use the West Bend is wonderful. The 1st thing I noticed and loved is that you barely have to bring the handle down and it just grabs the can and off it goes doing what it is suppose to. It doesn't let go until you lift the handle and take the can off and yes it takes the lid off with the attached top magnet. This has been a God send for me I love it!!!!!

After fighting for two years with my old can opener I finally got this one and love it. So far it opens cans with no effort. I tried out the built in knife sharpener a couple times already and it works much better than the last knife sharpener I had. Highly recommend!

HASH(0x987fc33c) out of 5 stars Good opener for the price Feb. 22 2007

I tend to agree with most the reviews. The opener is smooth, quiet and opens cans effortlessly. It does what is advertises. The bottle opener and the manual knife sharpener are on the back of the unit, so you would have to turn it everytime you want to open a bottle which is a bit inconvenient. Most people would probably opt to use other tools for that anyway. The opener has a removable head unit for cleaning which is an excellent feature.

I did not give it 5 stars because of the finish. I got mine in black and the finish does NOT have a nice luster to it which makes the opener look a bit on the cheap side. If the metallic version fits in your kitchen color scheme, then I would recommend that finish over the black for sure.

HASH(0x987fc588) out of 5 stars A Well-Engineered, Powerful, Precision, Balanced Can Opener May 8 2015

This review is preliminary. The new opener will require more use before further comments are posted.
My selection of the West Bend 77202 (in Black) was made after reading many other reviews for similar appliances.

Other factors that contributed towards selecting it were:

- The overall design; complements the finish and color of our other counter-top appliances.
- The sturdy heft and feel of the unit overall.
- The generous base dimension and other proportions which aids in stability.
- The quick-release feature for removing the cutting head for cleaning.
- The reasonable price point for a quality product.

Ok....this afternoon, I put the West Bend to the test. We adopted a Black Lab, now 2 YO. We make certain that she
gets fiber with her meals; pumpkin, sweet potato, and similar natural sources of fiber. I purchased a large can of
pumpkin, not the kind used for baking pies.

The can weighed 1 lb, 13 oz, 4" in diameter and 4-1/2" tall. Placed the can beneath the cutting edge,
pressed down on the lever, allowed the opener to cut into the can top and watched as it automatically
spun the can around, magnet engaged, and stopped by itself when finished. This is a heavy can and the
West Bend handled it well the first time. There was no ripping of the label nor anything else to complain about.
Frankly, I was somewhat skeptical that the magnet would not be able to hold onto the can, yet it did.

In conclusion, the West Bend performed as advertised; handled a heavy can of pumpkin with ease. I suspect that
this opener will have no problem handling soup cans as well. I'll report back following more testing.

HASH(0x987fc7c8) out of 5 stars It's only OK. Nov. 3 2006

Although it opens cans OK, it usually strips off a small amount of the paper label during the process. It is also sometimes difficult to attach the can to the opener.

Hey, not to be too redundant but this really is a good Can Opener. I have NO problems with it, my wife, who always has problems with can openers has "some" problems "sometimes" using it but as she NEVER could get any of the others to ever work this is a big improvement. The knife sharpener is an okay touch, however, if you have good knives I wouldn't use it. I sharpen by hand with an "Edge Pro" but hey, it's a CAN OPENER. It will sharpen a knife I just wouldn't put my $100 Schaaf "Golden Hamster" through, maybe my Chicago for a quick fix!
