"A Gen Y Nigella Lawson" – Glamour

"UK food writer Hornby’s voluminous compendium of culinary classics deserves to make the short list for novice cooks interested in learning how to make the basics from scratch. Over the course of the book’s 400‐plus pages, Hornby guides readers through everyday favorites like Huevos Rancheros, Lasagna, Paella, chicken wings and blue cheese dip, and apple pie. Though there are the occasional minor variations on classic recipes (a bay leaf is added to milk simmering for mac and cheese), Hornby’s by‐the‐book approach to everyday eating is a terrific resource for those with a taste for tradition. . . a terrific guide." – Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"One of the most heavily illustrated cookbooks of all time – Nothing’s left to chance and everything is beautifully explained – It could just be the best book for novice cooks ever." – Westside

This book gets me excited about cooking! As a beginner cook, I am often disappointed by detailed recipes in typical cookbooks that makes it hard to follow the instructions and gauge what exactly needs to be done. This cookbook solves that problem. With clear, colourful pictures of the steps it can give a novice cook the confidence to discover the kitchen. The cookbook has very basic recipes, from making a berry smoothie, to more complex ones like roast pork. There are some ethnic dishes in the mix too - from Spanish tapas to Middle Eastern hummus with marinated olives and pitas. The book is categorized as: breakfast & brunch, light lunches, simple suppers, food for sharing, weekend cooking, side dishes and desserts & baking. So it covers pretty much all that you need! Tips on planning a menu are also included at the end. If you're interested in learning how to cook, or just prefer a diverse array of recipes in a cookbook, I highly recommend this!

This is one of the best cook books that I have purchased for a while.
The pictures make all the difference in my opinion because they truely grab you into doing the recipe which is very easy to follow and very detailed so there is nothing for guessing.

I have tried almost all of the recipes in the book, and everytime I am stuck as in what to cook I am always assured that when I open this book it will jump to me.

I've searched high and low for the best cookbook, one that contains more than five recipes I will make. This is the one! This cookbook is laid out in the clearest manner, ideal for those new to cooking and the experienced. The pictures of every step make any of the recipes foolproof, and there is a picture of every recipe's finished product, too. Also, the ingredients in most of the recipes are those that you'll already have at home, so there's no need to buy obscure ingredients that you'll probably only use once!
I've made about 15 recipes from this book in the last month and every single one has turned out fantastic! In fact, it's so good that I've convinced three other people to buy it too!

I consider myself more of an intermediate cook/baker, so I know my way around my kitchen/tools/methods, by now. While this book didn't teach me anything I would consider ground-breaking-- it helped me to really nail down my basics (IE: pie crust). Not a single recipe has been a disappointment, yet. It's opened up some new cooking possibilities for me, too. I've found some really lovely recipes for international cuisine that I would not have previously thought of attempting myself(like Pad Thai). It's a brilliant book to have on hand for quick weeknight dinners and ambitious weekend cook-a-thons. Unless you're a master cook, your really can't go wrong with this book.

Bought this book for my own use and thought a friend ... who wanted to learn to cook ... would enjoy it too. We decided to challenge each other by picking out a new recipe each week and cook it. We live 600 miles apart so we will share via FaceTime. Should be fun for this new chef and for me to try new recipes.
